Pitcher Miles Scribner gave up just three hits and struck out 11 to lead defending Tri-State League champion Tri-Town to a 4-0 win over the Canton Crushers on Thursday night at Community Field in Litchfield. Scribner went the distance for the Trojans (6-0), striking out five batters looking. He didn’t give up a walk. Nick Michanczyk had a double for the Crushers (2-3) with Jim Spirito and Scott Sperl each hitting singles. Pitcher Cam Gaudet (0-1) went the distance on the mound for Canton, allowing five hits and striking out two.
Tri-Town took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Austin Dutcher tripled and scored on Danny McCarty’s RBI double. McCarty scored on Matt Geremia’s RBI double. In the second inning, Tri-Town extended the lead to 3-0 on a RBI single from Dutcher. In the fifth, Tri-Town pushed across another run on a sacrifice fly from McCarty. Dutcher was 2-for-3 in the game.
The Hunters win their 4th straight defeating the Naugatuck Nightmare 10-6. Ty Morin earned the win on the mound for the Hunters going 6.1 innings, scattering 5 hits, and striking out 4. Alex Hansen (yup, he’s still playing somehow) closed out the game and earned the save after keeping the best book of the year, his father Bob “O-Pedic” Hansen would be proud. The Hunters were led offensively by Chad Lavelle and George Zaruba who both had multi hit games as well as Josue Lopez who had a game to remember. Lopez went 4 for 4, (despite sustaining a calf “injury”) including a 3 run home run that broke the game open in the top of the 6th.
For the Nightmare, Jay Krajeski started on the mound and delivered a strong performance, keeping the game close for the first few innings. The Nightmare were led offensively by Matt Morelli who had 2 hits including a big double in the bottom of the 7th to bring the Nightmare within 4.
Fun facts of the game include: Despite the home run it was a tough day for Josue Lopez. He continues to struggle with the rules of baseball, this time not understanding that he was allowed to advance to the next base on a balk, he also almost missed home plate after his home run trot, Ty Morin continues to give his teammates grey hairs insisting on seeing how many walks and hit-batters he can pitch around in one game, Chris Rossi brings his hitting streak up to 6 games, and for the first time in his career Zack Martin refrained from throwing a temper tantrum after a tough strikeout.
