Jack Drewry had two doubles and a triple to lead the Mountain Boys. Mason Hansen had 3 hits and 3 RBIs.  Logan Stone and Jack Schwenger combined for the shutout.

Sunday June 28

Winsted Whalers 13  Naugatuck White Sox 2

Let’s go back to around 2021, give or take. Winsted was facing Amenia at home on a Sunday 9am game. TJ Kent was on the mound for the Whale and long story short, the score was roughly 12-0 favoring Amenia at the end of the first inning. That was the last start for Kent’s career…

UNTIL TODAY. On the mound, weighing in at 190lbs and standing 5’ 10” tall, Kent made his rebound appearance for the Whale against Naugatuck; he did not disappoint. Kent would walk the first 3 batters of the game, like a true Whaler, but would get out of it unscathed. For another 3 innings, he would stay scoreless finishing his start with 4 walks, 1 hit, and 3 Ks over 4 innings; retirement didn’t suit him well. Mitchell Gryniuk also pitched for the first time this year. Throwing at max effort and topping the gun at 75 mph, he would finish the game for the Whale.

The Whale’s offense was active in this game. Almost everybody provided hits, including Johnny Lippincott who hit another home run making three on the season. Owen McMahon hit one of the furthest balls he has hit but somehow only got a double out of it #saysheisthefastestbutapparentlynot. As for the ‘almost everybody provided hits’ comment above, Jay Torres, Andrew Billig, and our ‘I can hit’ PO Casey Weingart went O-for on the day; appreciate the help boys. Whale 13 Naugatuck 2

Cole Verano was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI as the Canton Crushers won their third straight game with a 10-8 win over the Torrington Thunder on Sunday at Bowdoin Field in Tri-State League action. The Crushers built a big lead as they recorded their 8th win of the season. With 13 hits, Canton (8-4) built a six-run lead, 10-4, before Torrington closed the gap in the final innings. It is the best record the team has had in its Tri-State League existence. The Crushers have set a new single season record for wins and have never been four games over .500 before. Canton’s second 3-game winning streak is a club record, too. It is the fifth time this season that Canton has had 13 hits or more in a single game.

Angel Christiano had two hits for Canton while seven other players had at least one hit in the game. Winning pitcher Jim Spirito (2-2) had a double while Ben Sullivan had a RBI triple. Three Canton pitchers combined to strike out nine but they also walked nine and allowed a season-high 14 hits. Jim Spirito scattered 10 hits over six innings, striking out five, walking five and allowing four runs. Trailing 2-0 in the first inning, Canton scored four runs on a RBI triple from Sullivan, a RBI single from Jack Rose, a RBI fielder’s choice from Jeff Mulhall and a RBI single from Jake Bryant. Leading 5-4, Canton scored five times in the sixth inning with a two-out rally to take a commanding lead. With two outs and one runner on first base, Nate Hiscox and Tom Spirito singled to load the bases. A walk drove in one run, Varano’s RBI single drove in a run and Christiano drove in two runs with a fly to center field. Sullivan loaded the bases again when he was hit by a pitch. The fifth run scored on a wild pitch. Torrington got on the board in the top of the first inning as Kyle Green singled to center, And Bryce Adamski walked, each scoring a run. Jake Bryant was able to shut the door in the ninth inning.

Canton returns to action on Tuesday when they host Winsted at Bowdoin Field at 5:45 p.m, Coach Tom Dubois stated Tuesday will be another War!

Burlington Hunters 11   Amenia Monarchs 1

The Burlington Hunters defeated the Amenia Monarchs 11-1 to secure their 9th win of the season.  Derek Duffy earned the win on the mound logging 6 innings, giving up 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 8.  In the second inning, Duffy tossed an immaculate inning.   Offensively the Hunters received contributions from all over the lineup.  Andrew Bunger, Chad Lavelle, and Jacob Paschetto all had 2 hit games.  One of Paschetto’s hits was a long 3 run home run to left center, his second of the year.   Steve Caruso and Josue “Sway” Lopez both had 3 hit efforts.  For the Monarchs, Leshawn Thrasher led the day at the plate with a 2 hit game and also drove in the teams 1 run on an RBI single.  Next up for both teams is a rematch of Sunday’s contest, this time in Amenia under the lights this Tuesday.  

Game Highlights: Without team DJ Chris Rossi, Steve Caruso stepped up with his yacht rock playlist in between innings; Sway should stick to baseball as he broke Steve Caruso’s driver working on his golf swing in the post game parking lot; and finally speaking of golf Zack Rinkavage and Taylor Donofrio decided they would rather enjoy the Travelers instead of playing baseball, both will be fined by team officials.
