Burlington Hunters 1 Tri-Town Trojans 0
In an early season match up the Burlington Hunters outlast the Tri-Town Trojans in a classic pitchers duel 1-0. Anthony Izzo started for the Hunters and logged 5 scoreless innings, surrendering just 2 hits while striking out 10. Tim Krol pitched the final two frames in relief and earned the win, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the 7th with a 4-6-3 double play. Miles Scribner threw all 7 innings and took the tough-luck loss for the Trojans in a strong effort, surrendering just 1 run, scattering 8 hits, and striking out 8. The lone run came in the top of the 7th inning when Jacob Paschetto swatted a solo home run to deep left field to give the Hunters the lead which proved to be just enough to secure the win. The Trojans are back in action this Sunday to take on the red-hot Canton Crushers, while the Hunters hope to continue their winning streak against the always dangerous Bethlehem Plow.
Game Highlights: Andrew Bunger almost fell down twice trying to get a bunt down, legend has it he is still falling; Tommaso Tollis disappointed Taylor Donofrio and needs base running lessons; and finally Clemente Award favorite Chris Rossi showed up not for the game, but for the post game just to buy the team pizzas after a hard fought victory.
Valley Ducks 6 Winsted Whalers 5
In a game that came down to the wire on Thursday at the original “Pond” at Tyrrell Middle School, the Quack win in walk-off fashion with a bases loaded blast from Nick Forino (which would have been a walk-off Grand Slam at any other park). Setting up the big moment, Ducks right fielder Tyler Leopizzo and Nick himself executed a perfect relay to cut down the go-ahead runner in the top of the 7th with 2 outs; a game-saving play!
The Ducks rallied late (for the 2nd game in a row) for the victory despite trailing the Whalers 5-1 in the 6th, when they capitalized on a 4-run inning to tie the game heading into the 7th!
In a wild finish, the Quack managed to tie the game thanks to a single by Ducks head coach Alex Mentone, ground ball by Leopizzo, and a game-tying 2-run single by Adrian Acosta who used his speed to get to third before a good throw beat him back to the bag.
The Whalers opened up the scoring in the first after an error scored a run while both starters put together good outings until the very end. Jacobi Bouchard dealt again, going 5.2 IP while surrendering 9 H on 9 K and 4 ER (none until a bases loaded blast of a double from Whalers leadoff hitter Jay Torres).
For the Whale, Casey Weingart surrendered just 2 R, both earned, on just 6 H across 5 IP. Brandon Spadolino picked up the W for the Quack, with a clean inning in the 7th.
The offense attack for the Whalers also included 10 H, in which hitters TJ Kent, Torres (3 RBI), and Mitchell Gryniuk all collected 2 a piece. Forino and newcomer Drew Caouette also collected 2 hits each for the Quack.
The Quack look to carry the momentum against the Candlewood Kraken (formerly Valley Kraken) in the battle for the Valley on Sunday, 11AM at Tyrrell Middle School.
