Watertown 6 Winsted 4: The Watertown Blaze broke out of a tie to take a 6-4 win over Winsted Monday evening in a Tri-State Baseball League second-round playoff game among 12 qualifying teams. The No. 7 seed Whalers beat No. 10 Terryville handily (5-2) in a first-round game in Winsted Saturday, but No. 2 Watertown, back from a two-game series in the Stan Musial Regional Tournament, was a taller order at Deland Field Monday. Aces Don Crossman for Winsted and Tyler King for Watertown faced off on the mound, but the teams’ hitters proved their own quality early.
In the bottom of the first, Watertown’s Connor McEvoy, Mike Mastrocola and Dick DeSimone combined three singles for a run with one out. Winsted ended the inning with a double play. Winsted batters took their turn in the second inning. King, who’s 9-0 for the 19-4 Blaze, walked the first two Whalers. Dave Lumpkin and Jeoff Langill hit bloop singles for Winsted’s first run. With one out, bases loaded, King got his second out on a pop-up to first. Zac Tuozzo, 4-for-4 against Terryville Saturday, stepped to the plate still hot. He blasted a three-run triple to left center field. The Whalers led 4-1. Until the bottom of the third inning.
This game, pitching mistakes were costly; big hits exacted the price. Like King in the second inning, Winsted’s Crossman walked two batters in the third. With one out, Mastrocola singled, loading the bases. Crossman got a strikeout, two outs. Then Chris Comeau hit a three-run double. The last runner slid just under the tag at home to tie the score, 4-4. King didn’t allow a runner past second base for the rest of the game. The Blaze had to wait two more innings against Crossman.
The bottom of the sixth started with a walk and a strikeout for Watertown. Then Brett Koliani (3 hits) rapped a double to left center. With runners on second and third, Crossman got another strikeout, then worked Justin Froese to a 1-2 count. Froese hit the next pitch up the middle for a two-run single that won the game. Winsted, 14-10, plays a must-win game against the Waterbury Wild Wednesday at Fuessenich Park in the double elimination playoffs.
Watertown goes up against the league’s other Stan Musial Regional delegate, the No.3 Brass City Brew, in the winner’s bracket.
Brass City 4 Naugatuck 1: The third-seeded Brew used the long ball to defeat the sixth-seeded Dogs on Monday. Jeff Fonti cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie, then Mike Padovani added a solo blast in the sixth to add an insurance run for Brass City. That was more than enough support for Brew starter Eric Gormley who pitched nine solid innings, allowing just a first inning run before finishing with five scattered hits and 11 strikeouts.
Brass City’s Paul Novakowski added an RBI single in the bottom of the first to knot the score at one, and finished the game 2-for-3 with a double. The Brew now face second seeded Watertown on Wednesday at Deland Field in Watertown for a 5:30 p.m. start. Naugatuck takes on No. 10 Terryville at 8 p.m. at Fuessenich Park in Torrington on Wednesday.
