Winsted Whalers 4   Torrington Thunder 1

The Whale is issuing a league wide warning to all teams; Torrington has top tier pitching. Ryan Green, who according to Torrington’s coach ‘just started wanting to pitch again’, absolutely shut down the Whale on Sunday. Going 4 innings, he only let up 1 ER, while allowing just 3 hits, 1 walk and striking out 8 guys. It was tough to tell what the issue was, which was between his mid-to-high 80s fastball, his late break slider, or his drop-off-the-table 12-6 curve. His whole pitch arsenal was well polished. One of the Whale’s POs who got to play the field that day, Casey Weingart, literally said “Why is it moving like that” after looking silly (this could be more descriptive, but I’ll be nice) after k-ing on a slider. The Whale’s offense heard the saxophones getting louder as the game went on because it was 1-1 all game. Mark Cummings did hit a double in the 4th with “the best swing he has ever taken” quoted by Chet Warner. Warner would then single Cummings in for their one run on Ryan Green. The doom and gloom clouds would clear for the Whale offense when Green was taken out after the 5th inning.

In the 5th inning, a traitor named Kyle Meholik (old Whaler player), came in for Torrington on the mound and before today, he hadn’t struck out anybody this year on the mound (also not a lot of innings pitched). Luckily for Meholik, the Whale had two POs to offer in their lineup and sure enough, Peter Greenwood was nice enough, in the 5th inning, to be late on Meholik’s fastball and K. DOORS. Greenwood, however, started for the Whale and went a solid 6 innings, allowing just 1 ER (blame Jay Torres on that one) 1 hit and 3 walks. I (the writer and coach) just noticed I pulled Peter with a one-hitter going. Tough. Anyways, the Whale would score 3 runs in the 8th inning which put the score to 4-1. This would be the final score

Play of the game was Owen McMahon grounding out in the bottom 7th, so Torres could lead off in the top of the 8th for which Torres doubled and started the rally. I guess that’s play of the game according to some of the Whale’s players? How about put it over the left fielder’s head Owen. Final Score 4-1 Whale win

Wolcott Scrappers 10   Amenia Monarchs 3

The Scrap racked up win no. 11 on Sunday, taking down the Amenia Monarchs 10-3 at Doc Bartlett Field. Both offenses filled the bases for the first 7 innings, but could not find the big hit to break the game open. With the Scrappers up 2-1 in the top of the 8th, a 6 spot with 2 outs would put the game away. Wolcott finished with 15 hits and many more quality swings (Josh Dunne to the warning track!?).
Alec Ash got the start for the Scrap, going 5 innings while giving up 1 hit and no earned runs. An unknown player threw a shutdown 6th with 2 Ks, and Mason Miller (Devin Fuegen) recorded the 9-out save with 3 Ks. His celebrations might need some work however. Offensively, Nick Sconziano had 3 hits and 4 RBIs, while Fuegen had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. Joe Ferruchi turned back the clock with 3 knocks, and had some impressive first base work as well (Nice back pick Joe Dunne!!). Carson Lentini and Josh Dunne had 2 hits, while Aidan Kane had a big 2-rbi single in the 8th.
Zach Spencer got the start for Amenia, and pounded the zone for 8 innings while giving up 2 earned runs. Matt Damon reached base 3 times and scored 2 runs for the Monarchs, while Sam Foley had a 2-run single in the 8th.

Bethlehem Plowboys 10   Canton Crushers 2

Nate Cormier collected three hits in four at bats, as the Plowboys defeated Canton Crushers 10-2 on Sunday at Bowdoin field . Cormier doubled in the first inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the fifth inning. Plowboys got on the board in the top of the first inning after Cormier doubled, Ryan Ponte singled to left field, Brett Davino doubled to center field, and Chase Belisle hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. Plowboys added one run in the third. Davino grounded out, making the score 5-0.

Sawyer Gravel earned the win for Plowboys. The right-handed pitcher surrendered three hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out three and walking one. Carsten Donovan pitched five innings in relief for Plowboys. The hurler surrendered five hits and two runs (one earned) while, striking out four and walking two. Cam Gaudet took the loss for Canton Crushers. The lefty went six and one-third innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking five.

The Plow  piled up 11 hits in the game. Ponte drove the middle of the lineup, leading Plowboys with four runs batted in. The cleanup hitter went 2-for-5 on the day. Jon Wilson collected two hits for Plowboys in five at bats. Plowboys had a strong eye at the plate, tallying six walks for the game. Freddie Camp and Ryan Reynolds led the team with two free passes each. Plowboys turned two double plays in the game. Kyle Banche after watching all 16 games from the sideline got back on the mound and just had to put the attention on himself, loading the bases in the ninth, then getting a pop out and a double play to shut the door!

The Canton Crushers accumulated nine hits in the game. Matt Rose and Mike Sullivan each collected two hits for Canton Crushers. Rose led Canton Crushers with one run batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Next up for Plowboys is a game at Torrington Thunder on Wednesday.

Burlington Hunters 3   Waterbury Mountain Boys 2

The Burlington Hunters defeated the Waterbury Mountain Boys 3-2 to secure their 15th win of the season.  The Mountain Boys got the scoring started by taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st thanks to an RBI double by Isaiah Walker.  Mountain Boys starter Justin DiGiovanna would keep the Hunter offense at bay until the bottom of the 5th when the Hunters scored 3 runs with a Taylor Donofrio RBI double (would NOT shut up about it, great) and a Sean O’Donnell RBI double.   Derek Duffy shut down the Mountain Boy offense the rest of the way to earn the win on the mound, throwing a complete game giving up 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 9.  Hunters are back in action tomorrow versus the Valley Ducks at Wolcott HS before traveling to Waterbury for a rematch with the Mountain Boys on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Game Highlights: Zack Rinkavage threw out a runner at home plate from right field and probably can’t throw the rest of the year; Did I mention Taylor Donofrio won’t shut up about how he can hit?; George Zaruba and Zack Rinkavage had multi-hit games; and finally Sean O’Donnell tried to do his best Benny “the Jet” Rodriquez impression, but was caught trying to steal home with Andrew Bunger at the plate sending a message that he had ZERO faith in Bunger coming up with a 2 out single, which is probably fair.
