Mother Nature was the victor in three of four games during Sunday’s Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League playoff action.
In the only game to be completed in full, the seventh-seeded Winsted Whale outslugged the second-seeded Tri-Town Trojans, 11-6, to even their best-of-three series at a game apiece. Game 3 is scheduled for today at 5:30 p.m. at Community Field in Litchfield.
Johnny Lippincott got on base four times for Winsted, going 2 for 2 with a double, single, two walks and three RBI. Austin Brochu was 3 for 4 to help pace the Whale onslaught. Mitchell Gryniuk threw six innings in relief of starter Casey Weingart and picked up the win. Gryniuk gave up a single earned run on five hits and two walks and struck out eight.
Matt Troy recorded a two-run triple while Jon McNelis was 3 for 5 with two doubles. Danny McCarty went 2 for 4 with a walk for Tri-Town. Bobby Chatfield took the loss for the Trojans.
The fourth-seeded Valley Ducks were just ahead of the fifth-seeded Amenia Monarchs, 2-1, before their Game 2 was suspended in the top of the sixth inning. The third-seeded Burlington Hunters led the sixth-seeded CT Sliders, 11-5, before their Game 2 was suspended in the top of the seventh inning. The top-seeded Bethlehem Plowboys and ninth-seeded Wolcott Scrappers never got their game going at Wolcott High School’s Tary Scott Memorial Field as it was postponed.
A busy day begins at 5:30 p.m. in both Wolcott and Litchfield. The Plowboys and Scrappers look to play Game 2 of their series at Wolcott High. The Trojans and Whale lock horns in Game 3 at Community Field in Litchfield.
At 6 p.m., the Ducks and Monarchs will finish their suspended game at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., the Hunters and Sliders pick up their suspended game, also at Municipal.
