Winsted Whalers 11 Tri-Town Trojans 6 FINAL SCORE
Game 2 of the series, the Tritown Trojans were up one game. Not letting off the gas pedal, they would start Bobby Chatfield who shut down the Winsted Whale previously on 7/25. Back against the wall, the Whale would start Casey “Acey” Weingart.
Top of the 1st, Jon McNelis would score a leadoff double, followed by another RBI double by Mike Fabiaschi. Danny McCarty would follow with a single. In a great play, McCarty would fake steal second and draw the throw. Fabiaschi would take off toward home, no contest, and McCarty would end up in a rundown, or so everyone thought. Still looking for that butterfly from the wildcard game, TJ Kent would take the throwdown, and just hold the ball, letting McCarty get back to first. Already up 2-0, the Trojans were ready to go. Ready to go was also the Whale. Lukas Gryniuk and Jay Torres would get on by HBP and BB, just for Johnny Lippincott to laser the ball into the gap, scoring Gryniuk and Torres on a double. Austin Brochu would single, moving Lippincott over while Steele Brobston would ground into a fielder’s choice, scoring Lippincott; score was now 3-2 Whale.
Tritown is no pushover. Top 2nd, Joey Grantmeyer would leadoff and single. Tom Troy would get on and Matt Troy would hit a gapper which with his speed, turned into a triple. Scoring Grantmeyer and his brother, Troy would give Tritown the lead, 4-3. Like a back-and-forth conversation, the Whale would answer again in the 3rd, with Torres getting on. After a passed ball, Lippincott would RBI single Torres in. The score was now 4-4. This was turning out to be a cutthroat game.
Weingart went 3 IP, 8 hits, 2 walks, 4 ER, and 4 K. Mitchell Gryniuk would come in the 4th to hold the daunting Trojan offense. Daunting as it is, the Trojans would score 2 more with Matt Troy walking, Fabiaschi singling, and McCarty 2RBI singling making it a 6-4 game. After this inning, Gryniuk would hold the Tritown offense for the whole game and total 6 IP, 1 ER, 2 Walks, 5 hits, and 8 strikeouts, including striking out Fabiaschi on a gimme heater.
Once the Whale’s 5th inning ABs started, the amp went to 11. Singles and doubles started flying off the Whale bats. Gritty ABs would catalyze these hits and before the final pitch in the 9th inning, the score would end up 11-6. Trojans Jon McNelis (3-5, 2 Doubles, 1 Single) and Danny McCarty (2-4, 2 Singles, 1 Walk) would lead their offense while the Whale’s Johnny Lippincott (2-2, Double, Single, 2 Walks) and Austin Brochu (3-4, 3 Singles) would lead theirs. Final Score, 11-6 Whale.
