Tuesday June 18 – Wed June 19 Finals
Bethlehem Plowboys 2 Wolcott Scrappers 0
The Plowboys scraped out a win over the Wolcott Scrappers 2-0 in a tight ball game at the Wolcott BAW. Tyler Boisvert was the gem of the day, throwing a complete game 1 hit shutout with 10ks. The only runs in the game came in the top of the third when Ian Schmidt roped a 2 RBI double scoring Matt Mancini and Jesse Swartout (with coach Eric O’toole looking on who coached them both at Sacred Heart). The Scrappers sole hit came from AJ Martinez who also pitched 3 innings allowing 2 hits striking out 3. Blake Stone pitched the final 4 innings for the Scrappers, striking out 4 and keeping Wolcott in the game up until the end.
Tri-Town Trojans 2 Naugatuck Scorpions 0
Miles Scribner brought a perfect game into the 5th inning, striking out eight while scattering two hits and not allowing a walk. Tommy Troy’s lead off knock in the 3rd was followed up by a Matt Troy RBI single to start the scoring. Danny McCarty had a lead off double in the 4th and eventually came around to score after an error. “Sam” had a pair of singles while Naugatuck pitching struck out 10 batters.
Burlington Hunters 5 Valley Ducks 3
On Latin Appreciation Night in Wolcott, The Los Cazadores defeated El Patos 5-3. Ty Morin notched the win on the mound for Los Cazadores scattering 4 hits and allowing 2 runs, 1 of those runs thanks to Andrew Bunger who saw his life flash before his eyes and missed a line drive. Taylor “The Jerk” Donofrio would tally the rare 8 out save to close out the game for Los Cazadores, striking out 3 and surrendering 1 run. Los Cazadores did most of their damage in the 4th inning when they plated 4 runs. Andrew Bunger and Sway Lopez led the charge offensively both having multi-hit games. For El Patos, Chris Oliwa started on the mound and kept Los Cazadores off balance for most of the game. Ty Pelletier, like a true coward, tried to bunt for a base hit twice. He also drove in a run with a RBI double. Nick Forino also smacked 2 doubles and drove in 2 runs for El Patos.
Game Highlights include: Cazadore legend Steve Caruso made an appearance all the way from Virginia; Trying to relive his glory days at the great Becker College, Sway Lopez attempted to steal third and was thrown out by 40 feet, with his jersey halfway unbuttoned there was too much drag when he ran; For some reason best friends George Zaruba and Sway decided to share batting gloves which concerned the home plate umpire; and finally Team Officials have decided to pay the ransom for Ryan Lavelle in hopes he finally returns to the lineup.
CT Sliders 4 Amenia Monarchs 1
The sliders defeated the Amenia monarchs 4-1 in what was another tightly contested matchup. The game remained scoreless until the 4th inning when a leadoff single by Pat Smith (2-4 2 runs) followed by a perfectly placed bunt base hit by Josh Dobratz and a walk by Ray Campbell when Ryan glover (2-3 2 rbi) hit a 2 rbi single only to be matched by his brother Ian (2-3 rbi). Tyler Fernandes also showed up big for the sliders going 3-4 with 2 runs scored. The sliders were ultimately kept in the game by another impressive outing for cy young candidate Henry Marino tossing a complete game striking out 14. For Amenia, Colby Dunlop added a long triple , Matt Damon added a double and two hits.
Winsted Whalers 17 Canton Crushers 6
Winsted would start their ace, Casey Weingart, and Canton would start their top guy, Taylor Riley. Casey would throw a great 4 innings, giving up only 1 earned run, 7 hits, and 3 strikeouts. Falling off a bike is tough, getting back up is the true test; that is what Peter Greenwood would do today. After giving up a ~500ft grand slam to Jack Rose from a 2023 season game, he would come back to Canton and record the save, holding Canton to 6 runs, only allowing 3 of the 5 that would score during his time. Taylor would mirror Casey, go 4 innings, giving up only 1 earned run, 5 hits, and 3 strikeouts. Once Taylor was out, the Whale offense would wake up. The Whale would score 17 runs between Jay Torres (3-5, 3 Doubles), Lukas Gryniuk (4-5, 3 Doubles, 1 Single), Andrew Billig (2-4, 2 Singles) and other collective hits from the team. The Whale’s Mark Cummings would also help going (1-3, Double) tying his 2024 season hit record. As for the Canton offense, Matt Rose and Jack Rose, who are their top power hitters, would go 3-4 and 2-4, with a collective of 5 soft singles. With a new ankle, made of a new material called fiber-reinforced polycarbonate glass, Jake Bryant was able to pitch in this game, ending his three-year drought on the mound. The game would end, 17-6 Winsted Whale win. If there is anything to take away from this game, it is that Lippincott pitched an inning, that itself is as rare as gold.
