Bethlehem Plowboys 11 Tri-Town Trojans 5
The Plowboys knocked off the previously undefeated Trojans on a muggy Sunday morning at The Plow, 11-5. Tyler Boisvert got the start going 7 strong innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, striking out 6. Bobby Chatfield opposed Boisvert, battling through 6 innings allowing 8 runs on 11 hits. The Plow jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back, Jon Wilson, Joe Rupe, and Greg Campbell reached base to start the game and were knocked in by Colby Linnell, Matt Mancini, and Matt Palombo. Jarrett Michaels hit a long home run to left center in the bottom of the 4th to give the Plow a little cushion. Tri Town knocked in 2 runs off boisvert in the 7th on a 2 rbi double by Matt Troy. Willy Yahn and Danny McCarty led the Trojan bats, with Yahn going a smooth 4-5 and playing a slick shortstop. Aiden Donahue had a 2 rbi double in the 8th as well. Isaiah Johnson, Joe Rupe, and Alex James all reached base twice as well for the Plow. Kyle Banche came on to get the final 6 outs for the Plow, letting in 3 runs to cut the deficit to 8-4 in the 8th but fresh outta Nonnewaug high school Matt Palombo came through with a big 2 rbi double after battling from down 0-2, working the count to 3-2 and coming up clutch to put the final dagger in the game. The Plow is back at it Tuesday vs the Gamecocks!
Naugatuck Nightmare 8 Amenia Monarchs 2
An overcast day kept the sun away, which meant the 90% humidity and 75 degrees wasn’t too bad to play baseball in. The Whale had Mark Cummings start for them and the Vipers had Julio start for them. For the first two innings, both pitchers kept the other team at bay, only allowing 1 run each. The Whale in the bottom 3rd would tack on 5 runs, making it a 6-1 game with Andrew Billig, Lukas Gryniuk, and Chet Warner knocking down a single, double, and single to score those. The top of 4th, the Vipers would answer with 4 more with Joe leading off with a walk, a couple more walks, Brandon singling, and more walks to make it a 6-5 game. The Whale likes to chat, so they answered with 10 more. The Whale lineup would bat around, all getting on base their first time up except Jay Torres; he was benched after that. Notables: Lukas Gryniuk had a 400+ft ‘double’, Owen McMahon is challenging Chet Warner for most HBP for season, and Mark Cumming’s favorite saying is “doubles or nothing.” The game was called due to weather after the top 5th ended. Final Score: Whale 16 – Vipers 5.
The Burlington Hunters defeated the Canton Crushers 9-4, improving their record to 11-4. Alex Stackpole started on the mound for the Hunters, scattering 4 hits while striking out 8. Dave Alarcon in a scoreless relief effort helped close out the game. James Michanczyk started on the mound for the Crushers and did a good job quieting the Hunter offense until finally in the bottom of the 6th the Hunters were able to push across 5 runs. The Hunters were led offensively by Zack Martin who had 2 hits including a double, and drove in 3 runs. Tommaso Tollis also had a 2 hit day. The Rose brothers both had big days offensively for the Crushers, Matt Rose stroked a loud solo shot over the right center fence that got out in a hurry, the first homer of his career.
Fun facts of the game include: Jobu is now 4-0 since joining the Hunters bench, Tommaso Tollis pimped a double and was almost thrown out at second, Tollis also did his best Josh “Buttons” Lopez impression by falling down while trying to catch a routine pop-up, and finally Crusher Jimmy Spirito almost got lost in the woods searching for the home run ball after the game.
