Sunday 7/24
Blasius Chevrolet 7 Valley Ducks 4 (Saturday 7/23)
On a balmy Saturday morning Blasius would travel to Wolcott looking to avoid any chance of being part of a play-in game on Tuesday. The offense would come out as hot as the weather as leadoff hitter Conor Goggin would waste little time getting things going. Lining the first pitch of the game back up the box for a single. He would then quickly steal second base, and score on Steve Carosella’s single to deep center field. The single is being checked for record for longest single in Tri-State history. Two outs later Mike Vaccarelli would triple and score on Paul Novakowski’s RBI single. Staked to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first Blasius starter Dave Vadnais would waste as little time as possible giving up the lead. Pelletier would get things going with a quick single and score on Dek long home run to left field. A few trees were damaged on the home run but are still standing. The Ducks would add another I the first on a double by Dadonna and an RBI single from Fusco. In a sign that neither team would be willing to give an inch of let anyone escape the surface of the sun type heat. The boys in yellow would answer right back in the top of the second. Fran Phelan would get things started with a one out walk. Which would be followed by Sal Trichilo single and Goggins second single of the game would drive in Phelan who luckily avoided Blasius new third base coach Matty. The score would remain tied until the bottom of the fourth when the Ducks would once again get to Vadnais. Shane Fusco would lead off with a single and would move to second on a Plourde single; both runners would move up on a wild pitch. Fusco would come into score on Griffins one out fielders’ choice. That would be the last run that Vadnais would give up and Blasius would take the lead in the sixth inning. The top of the sixth would start and end with Phelan who led off the inning with a double. He would come in to score the tying run on a Carosella single. Vaccarelli would double in Carosella and by the Phelan would come to bat again the damage was done. Blasius had put up 5 in the inning and would look to escape the heat as they prepared for the regular season finale against Winsted.
Blasius Chevrolet 9 Winsted Whalers 5
After surviving the heat in Wolcott Blasius traveled to Historic Thomaston High School for the regular season home final as The Hotch continued to undergo repairs and playoff preparations. The game would determine home field advantage between Winsted and Blasius. Paul Novakowski would take the bump making his first appearance in 15 years. He would waste little time falling in line with the rest of the Blasius staff not named Brooks Belter by giving an early run. Winsted would get off to a hot start with a leadoff double by Owen McMahon who would score when Andrew Bilig would single in the next at bat. Blasius would take the lead in the second when Fraz Kader would leadoff the inning with a long double and score on Colby Linell’s single. Steve Carosella would cap the inning with a two-run single. Novakowski would keep making this pitching thing look easy as he would mow along. In the fourth inning as once again Carosella would drive in two more runs with yet another single. The fifth inning would be where the game was put out of reach Blasius would add three more runs highlighted by Steve Harrison’s first right-handed hit of the season. After a team only meeting in the Winsted dugout the whale would find the formula to getting Novakowski off his game. The top of the sixth would start like every inning sense the first at Novakowski would get the leadoff hitter. The second batter of the inning would be one pitch away from sending the Whale down to their final 4 outs when he would risk life and limb by leaning into the strike zone to work his way on base. The next two batters would work their way on with walks, before Pulino would hit along double, and Johnny Lippincott would follow up with a long triple. Cummings would single and capping the scoring. The win for Blasius moved them into fourth place on the season and with home field advantage in the first-round playoff series with Winsted. Novakowski survived the day and put himself in line for a possible Playoff start. Once again, the boys would like to thank their fans and their sponsor for what was a great regular season.
