Tuesday July 26 – Wildcard playoffs (single elimination)
Wolcott Scrappers 5 Southington Gamecocks 3
Burlington Hunters 6 Valley Ducks 2
In a win or go home Wildcard game, The Burlington Hunters defeated the Valley Ducks 6-2 to advance to the first round of the Tri-State Playoffs. Taylor Donofrio started on the mound for the Hunters and went the distance allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, and striking out 3. The Hunters were led offensively by George Zaruba (3/3, 2B, R) and Jheremi Rosado who delivered a huge 2 RBI triple in the first inning. The Hunters would score 5 in the first inning and that proved to be all they needed to close out the game.
Hunters were confused when they saw a clean shaven Ty Pelletier take the mound for the Ducks to start the game. Without his amazing mustache, Pelletier would struggle in the first inning. Pelletier would later admit “A brutal mistake, I can’t believe I shaved all that mojo off of my face”. He would be replaced by Matt Kozlowski who would finish out the game allowing just 1 run and scattering 4 hits over 5.2 innings.
Game highlights include: The Hunters win their first playoff game in 8 years, The Hunters complete just their 3rd game of the year without allowing an unearned run, Chris Rossi did not fall for a hidden ball trick, Zack Martin missed the biggest game of the year to go on vacation to the lovely, beautiful state of…. Delaware? and all 5 fans in attendance appreciated the return of Tyler Doyle and his DJ skills.
Saturday July 30 (9 innings)
Game 1: Tri-Town Trojans 19 Burlington Hunters 0
Game 1: Amenia Monarchs 13 Wolcott Scrappers 7
Game 1: Bethlehem Plowboys 11 Brass City Vipers 10
Isaiah Johnson. Remember the name, the Bethlehem Plowboys opened up their series with the Vipers with an 11-10 victory in a back and forth game where bats from both sides were on fire. George Bielizna got the start for Plow going 6 plus allowing 8 runs (6 earned) striking out 5. Both starters battled finding the zone all day, Collin got the start for the vipers going 3.1 innings pitched allowing 6 runs and striking out 4. The Vipers jumped out early putting 4 up in the top of the first thanks to an rbi single by Bryant and a 3 run homer by Jalen. But the plow answered back in the bottom half putting 3 runs up and ended up tying it in the bottom of the second on a Jarrett Michaels home run to left field. Leads were traded about every other inning with Joray and Doilmend for the Vipers both hitting 2run homers. The second best hit of the day (somehow) came in the bottom of the 7th when Joe Fainer hit an absolute nuke over the trees in left to give the plow a lead. Bethlehem went up 10-9 going into the 9th but the Vipers snuck the tying run in on a bang-bang safe call on a steal of third base with 2outs in the 9th that led to an rbi single by Doilmend. Kyle Banche (he’s a PO that’s why he wasn’t out on the field) relieved George going 4 strong innings allowing 2 runs and striking out 5 to get the W. And in the bottom of the ninth, game all tied up, isaiah Johnson had enough baseball for the day and took the first pitch to dead center over the press box to walk off the plowboy win! Did we mention he has abs? Great game by both teams, some fun light hearted chirping back and forth that kept both teams having fun and on there toes all game, game 2 takes place at municipal field tomorrow at 2pm.
Game 1: Blasius Chevrolet 9 Winsted Whalers 3
Sunday July 31 (9 innings)
Game 2: Tri-Town Trojans 14 Burlington Hunters 0
Game 2: Amenia Monarchs 14 Wolcott Scrappers 5
Game 2: Bethlehem Plowboys 6 Brass City Vipers 2
The Bethlehem Plowboys swept the opening series of the playoffs with a 6-2 win over the Brass City Vipers on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Jason Johnson got the start for Bethlehem going 3.2 innings pitched striking out 3 hitters and allowing 2 unearned runs. Daclament and Kyle scored the 2 runs for the Vipers on the afternoon. The Vipers pitching held the Bethlehem bats at bay throwing a no hitter through 5 innings but the bats woke up in the 6th. Greg Campbell (the captain) laced a triple in the gap with 1 out and Joe Fainer ended up knocking him in with an RBI single. And then in the 8th the Plow took the lead and never gave it back, Ryan Bethin led off the inning with a single and then Joe Rupe laid down a beautiful bunt hit to put runners on first and second with no one out, Ricky Descoteaux knocked Bethin in and Fainer knocked Campbell in once again to make it 3-2. The Plowboy pitching after Johnson departed was better then ever, Dan Keckler took the ball in the 4th and went on to throw 4.1 innings striking out 5 and not allowing a single hit, then in the 9th after the Plow added 3 more insurance runs, Keegan Daigle shut the door to lock up the Plowboy W. The Plowboys take on there long time rival the Amenia Monarchs with whom they split the season series with, should be a great semi final matchup!
