Winsted Whalers 4 Blasius Chevrolet 3
The weather was perfect for the 9am game start. Robert Weiss started for the Whale while Fran Phalen started for Blasius. So far, out of the Whale’s last 2 of 3 starts, they have managed to give up a run or more in the first inning. To typical fashion, Blasius’ lineup also ready to hit, the Whale gave up one run with Steve Carosella singling and Eric Rovinetti doubling. End of top 1 it was already 1-0 Blasius. A pitching duel would ensue between Weiss and Phalen until the 4th inning. Phalen had an instant of arm pain that took him out of the game. He was throwing so well that if he had stayed in, the Whale might have not come out on top. Robert Weiss would pitch 6 innings, giving up 2ER, 7 hits, and 2Ks. Ryley Weiss, his younger brother, would come in and close the game. He would finish the game with 3 IP, 1ER, 3 Hits, and 1K. The Weiss combo is very strong. Blasius hitters were ready for the Whale, like Connor Goggin who went 2-4, double, 3 Stolen Bags, and Steve Harrison who went 2-3, including a double. Whale hitters were just a little more ready with Mark Cummings 2-2, and Tim Smith in the 4 slot, 2-4. I have never seen a 4 hitter hit so many ground balls. The game would go to the bottom of 9th tied. With bases loaded, Jay Torres would hit a walk off single to score the winning run on third. Final score, 4-3 Whale.
Thunder Ducks 7 Brass City Vipers 3
It was a SANDLOT SUNDAY! The Valley Ducks beat the Brass City Vipers 7-3 on Sundays action. As there were no umpires (Waterbury Commish accidentally had wrong time scheduled), both teams were left to fend for themselves. Both teams would agree that the catchers called a fair and reasonable game. The Ducks were carried on the mound and at the plate by Zach Royka and Ronnie St. Dennis. Royka went 8 innings, allowing 8 hits, and struck out 6. St. Dennis got the save. Royka went 3-3 at the plate with 2 singles, a double, one rbi and one hbp. St. Dennis went 2-4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI’s. Joe Kwaak gave the Vipers a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning with a 2 run home run. Kwaak had two hits on the day. Joevanni Torres got the start for the Vipers, going 4 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits striking out 4. Torres also had an rbi single. The ducks fought back in the top of the 5th scoring 4 runs after falling behind in the 4th. Donny Ek contributed a hit, Alex Hinkle hit a double and Ty Pelletier had an rbi single. The Quack Attack is back in action Thursday in a battle of the birds against the Southington Gamecocks.
