Will Aldam hurls no-hitter

Usually the second game of a double header sees teams take it easy and just try to get through a long day of baseball. In the Tri-State league with multiple teams showing up you always have to bring your best. Blasius knew that a hungry Winsted team was coming to town and would be looking to make a statement. Due to the strong pitching the Blasius had received during the week and in game one Will Aldam (6-0) knew he had back up. However, he would never need it as he cruised through 6 perfect innings. Only in the top of the 7th did the leading Cy Young candidate Aldam give any pause as the leadoff hitter for the Whalers would work to a full count, the first of the game. If you have seen any baseball in your life you know how this at bat finished. As a pitcher you never want to put a perfect game in the hands of an umpire. For Aldam a pitch that seemed to be at the letters went the hitter way and the prefect game was gone. The Whalers would get no more as a smooth 5-4-3 double play and a strike out later, Aldam would have the first No-Hitter in Blasius history. Completing something just three nights earlier his roommate Tim Kennedy couldn’t do against Naugatuck when he was only able to throw a one hitter. The 7-0 win moved Blasius to 9-1 on the year and in a tie for first place with the Tri-Town Trojans. The Blasius pitching staff have been on an amazing run only giving up 3 hits and zero runs over the last 19 innings. First place Blasius (9-1) travel to Gallop field on Wednesday July 3rd to face the Bethlehem Plowboys

Game one of a double header started with two of last year’s baby Blasius taking center stage. The stamp on the game would be made by one member of the baby Blasius and one of the old guard. After Fran Phelan (1-0) set Canton Down in order in the top of the first Blasius new leadoff hitter Connor Goggins took the second pitch, he saw in the bottom of the first 350 feet to left for his second homer run of the year and spotting the home team a 1-0 lead. That is all Phelan would need as he cruised through 5 innings giving up only 2 hits. Even though Phelan wouldn’t need the help he would get it from the hottest hitter the Tri-State league Jeff Fonti. Fonti who had two hits against Naugatuck on Thursday. Would pick up right where he left off banging out two more hits and drive in 3 runs making the score 4-0. In the bottom of the 5h the sky would open, and the rains came. After both teams would seek shelter in their dugouts. The rain would stop. The damage was done, and the game was called. The win would get Blasius to 8-1 and send the win streak to 7. The lose sent Canton to 1-9. For Blasius the win would be able to be enjoyed for a few hours as 3 hours after the last out. copyright Peter Wallace Register Citizen 6/30/2019: With two RBIs already under his belt, Tri-Town player/coach Danny McCarty broke the Trojans out of a tie with the Bethlehem Plowboys with a walk-off single for a 5-4 Tri-State Baseball League win at Litchfield’s Community Field Sunday afternoon. “I’ve never been a power hitter,” said the veteran shortstop, now moving over to third base with back problems. Back problems don’t slow his bat. “It’s hard to beat me on a pitch,” McCarty said. “I’ve always said, when they can get a fastball past me, I’ll retire.” In a high-quality league in which many of the former college and MLB players have a wife and kids, fastballs are often the least of their worries. “It’s like a gift when I can come here and play,” said complete-game winning pitcher Charlie Benson. “I can’t get here on weekdays, so the other guys take care of that while I pitch on weekends,” said the lefty, who pitched for UMass-Amherst before joining Tri-State’s Watertown Blaze for six years, then Tri-Town for the past three. The first-place Trojans (10-1) are glad to have Benson whenever they can get him. Sunday, Benson gave up two runs in the first inning and two in the fourth, then held the Plowboys (6-5) hitless while waiting for his offense to bring the game home. Leading 4-2 through five-and-a-half innings, Bethlehem’s problem was keeping its edge. “We’re struggling a little in the middle of the year,” said Coach Dan Goscinski. “We let them catch up in the bottom of the sixth with an error and a ball over our outfielder’s head; then we put two runners on in the top of the seventh. In a situation like that, you’ve gotta put the ball in play.” The Plowboys, one of the oldest and most celebrated teams in the league, started the game with a vengeance. Two hits, by Mike Milius (2-for-3, RBI, run scored) and Joe Fainer (RBI) joined a hit batter and RBI ground-out by Greg Campbell for a two-run lead in the top of the first inning. Tri-Town came back for a run in the bottom of the inning on hits by Shane Beirfeldt (run) and the first RBI by McCarty (3-for-4, double) and another in the third on a walk to Casey McDonald (2 runs)) and McCarty’s second RBI. Tied 2-2, the Plowboys grabbed the lead again in the top of the fourth on a leadoff double from Ted Gravel (run) and hits by Justin Taylor (RBI, run) and Milius. But, for the past two years, a 4-2 lead against defending league champion Tri-Town can seem like poking a dragon. Benson (7 innings, 5 hits, 7 strikeouts, 1 walk, 4 hit batters) bore down for the next three innings, allowing one base runner in the fifth (hit batter). Facing the top of the Plowboy order in the seventh, Benson allowed those two base runners on a hit batter and an error, then struck out the second, fourth and fifth batters in the Plowboy order. Trojan batters, held to five hits in the first five innings against Tyler Erickson, also bore down. Sam Shurberg (run); Landon Gardella (2-for-3, RBI double) and Tom Troy (2-for-3) started the sixth inning with hits, one out. Shurberg scored on Gardella’s double. Gardella tied it on a throwing error on Troy’s hit. At 4-4, Bethlehem couldn’t do it against Benson in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Tri-Town could. With one out, McDonald grounded a single through the left side and stole second. McCarty drew a two-one count against Erickson, then walked it off with a hit up the middle. “They’re a good team, but we’ll be all right in the (league) tournament,” said Goscinski. “We’re going to get back to what we do best, play defense.” The Trojans can hardly wait.

Litchfield Cowboys/Burlington Hunters
Litchfield jumped out to an early lead against the Hunters scoring 9 in the first 3 innings on 8 hits. The Hunters mounted a comeback scoring 5 in the 4th on 5 hits. But the Cowboys managed to put the game out of reach in the 5th scoring 4 more giving Justin Koutros (3er 4K) enough of a cushion to go a complete game to record his 4th win of the season. Leaders for Cowboys were Ed Pequignot (3-4 4R 1Rbi), Steve Harrison (3-4 1r 3rbi), Drew Gauvain (4-5 2r 3rbi) and Steve Consiglio (3-4 1r 2rbi). For the Hunters, Zack Parent went 1-3 with 2rbi and Alex Hansen went 1-3 with 1Rbi. Cowboys play the Terryville Black Sox Sunday.
Wolcott Scrappers 11 Winsted Whalers 5
Wolcott scrappers defeated Winsted Whalers Sunday night at the BAW in Wolcott by the score of 11-5. Wolcotts Isaiah Negretti again pitched a strong game going 6 innings spreading out 9 hits with 9 strikeouts. Winsted got things started in the top of the 1st scoring 3 runs on hits by Tj Kent , Devin Warren and John Lippincott. Wolcott answered right back in the bottom of the 1st scoring 3 themselves after the 1st 3 scrappers walked , a fielders choice and a Steve Urbanski single . Wolcott came back out in the 2nd taking a 5-3 lead with Danny Kennedy leading off with a dble , a Brendan Clark single and Jack Drewry dble . For Wolcott Brendan Clark has a single and a triple with 3 rbi, Jeff Nicol 2 singles and 2 runs scored, Jack Drewry dble 2 scored and 1 rbi, Alan Stinson single 2 rbi and Danny Kennedy single amd sble with 1 scored.
Southington 66ers 7 Tribury Cave 4
Sunday night at Recreation Park in Southington, Joe Daigle and Adriano Moura pitched the Southington 66ers over the Tribury Cave 7-4. Daigle pitched a strong 7 innings to get the win while Moura pitched two shutout innings for the save. For the 66ers, Patrick Raymond, Tyler Fernadez, and Daigle had two hits, Vic DeSimone added a hit and 3 rbi, Pat Smith and Moura had rbi singles, and Carm Perugini and Ben Hampton contributed hits. For Tribury, Zac Goldberg and Vin Lombardi had two hits, John Delucia doubled, and Matt Delucia and Ben Guisti added hits.
Torrington Rebels 9 Bristol Greeners 6
The Torrington Rebels beat the Bristol Greeners 9-6 Sunday night at Fuessenich Park, The Greeners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning led by A.J. Lorenzetti (3-5, 2B). Tyler Ropp kept the Rebels bats quiet until the 6th inning when Shawn Grose (3-5, 3RBI) cleared the bases with a line drive double to right center. Winning pitcher Josh Rubino threw seven strong innings for the Rebels while Greeners leadoff hitter Zac Bartolome wore down the Rebels arms with multiple double digit pitch at bats. The Greeners threatened in the 9th scoring two runs but came up short against closer Joe Deming.
