Bethlehem Plowboys 5 Tri-Town Trojans 4

With a little over a week left in the Tri-State Baseball League’s regular season, the Bethlehem Plowboys (8-7) previewed a tight post-season with a 5-4 win over the league-leading Tri-Town Trojans (12-3) Friday evening at Bethlehem’s Gallup Field. Waterbury’s Brosius Chevrolet and the Terryville Black Sox are right behind at 11-3. Three more teams are in their shadow with four losses apiece. The top 12 teams (of 17) qualify for the tournament, so the Plowboys, currently in eighth place, issued their challenge with the win.
“We’ve had a tough time getting all our people here,” said Coach Dan Goscinski. “We’re getting older, and they all have families and jobs. But we take the warrior approach. We want to qualify for the tournament and then make some noise.” Friday, the biggest noise came from 18-year-old Will Gerski. The Woodbury resident, with one more year left at Avon Old Farms before heading to Georgetown University, was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBI as he and the Plowboys proved the old maxim that it’s not how many hits, but when and where. Tri-Town’s Bobby Chatfield and Charlie Benson held the Plowboys to just four hits, but every hit was huge.
Plowboys Jon Wilson and Tony Geraci led off with walks in the first inning. Matt Mancini’s ground-out scored Wilson. A double by Gerski brought Geraci home with a 2-0 lead. Two innings later, three more hits were even bigger. Geraci started with a single to left; Mike Chiovitti doubled him home. Then Gerski blasted a two-run homer into Gallup Field’s left field bushes. Charlie Benson no-hit the Plowboys for the next three innings, but the horses were long-gone from the barn. If a youthful Gerski provided most of Bethlehem’s offensive firepower, 10-year Plowboy veteran Tyler Erickson was commander of its defense. Erickson’s seven strikeouts put out the fires from Tri-Town’s eight hits until the top of the fifth inning, when Trojan hits by Matt Troy, Tom Troy and Andrew Prince (2 RBI) combined with a walk and an error for four Tri-Town runs, two of them unearned. With a two-seam fastball hitting the right spots, Erickson allowed just one more hit in the next two innings.
Bethlehem’s win is an example of the tournament threats to come for Tri-State’s leaders. Tri-Town’s pair of back-to-back games Thursday and Friday are a preview of the grueling tournament road. The Trojans beat Naugatuck 5-1 in a game that ended at 10:30 Thursday night before regrouping at Gallup Field on Friday.

Southington 66ers 3 East Mountain Cougars 2
In a well-pitched and well-played extra inning game by both teams, the Southington 66ers edged the East Mountain Cougars 3 to 2 at Crosby High School. 66ers pitchers Kyle Dube, Josh Dobratz, and Joe Rivera battled the Cougars Luke Shaffer and Justin Proteau for 8 innings. East Mountain scored in the first on a Proteau RBI single that plated AJ Petrillo who led off with a single and stole second. The score remained 1-0 Cougars until the top of the 7th when the 66ers Dobratz walked and scored after singles by Pat Smith and Tim Jalbert to tie the game at 1-1. In the 8th, Dube doubled, moved to third on a ground out by Carm Perugini who singled earlier, and Patrick Raymond reached on a miscue scoring Dube. Dobratz doubled home Raymond to extend the 66ers lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the 8th, East Mountain scored an unearned run for the final tally of the game, as Rivera worked out of a jam to gain the win.
