Bristol Greeners 7 Winsted Whalers 2
The Bristol Greeners beat the Winsted Whalers in a rain-shortened, six inning game, by a score of 7-2. Jerry LaPenta picked up the win, going 5 innings and giving up no earned runs. Reid Roberge and Gil Roy had 2 RBI each for the Greeners, while Winsted’s Johnny Lippincott had two hits, a run and an RBI.
NOTE: Winsted batted around and plated eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 10-7 Winsted. The Winsted rally was led by singles from Andrew Billig, Ben Schumacher, Tim Smith and Connor Guiheen. Tim Smith and Chester Warner also drew walks to help the cause. Winsted reliever Ben Schumacher, after retiring the side in order in the bottom of the sixth inning, struck out the first two Bristol batters in the bottom of the seventh inning and had an 0-1 count on the third batter when the umpires were forced to call the game because of a lightning strike over the field.
The Tri-State League plays MLB rules during the regular season, which states other than a power outage (lights go out) or emergency of some sort, that a game called due to weather (rain, lightning) will be a legal game if 5 innings or more have been completed. The game would revert back to the last full inning completed. Final score:
Bristol 7 Winsted 2. Kudo’s to the Winsted team who stated they did not blame the umpires for calling the game due to lightning.
NOTE2: The Tri-State League has adopted playoff rules that are a bit different and I will update everyone later in the year come playoff time.
