Southington notches win in first Tri-State game
Southington 66ers 12 Thomaston Threshers 6
Winning pitcher Rich Martinelli combined with Jake Kawiecki for 14 strikeouts and allowed just 6 hits as the Southington 66ers picked up their first ever victory in the Tri-State Baseball as they downed the Thomaston Threshers 12-6 at Thomaston HS. Andrew Goralski 3 hits including 2 triples and 3 runs scored; Josh Dobratz and Pat Smith 3 hits; Steve Roy, Pat Raymond and Alexis Melendez 2 hits led the Southington offense.
For Thomaston: Shea Roberson 2 hits 2 runs scored; Will Sirotnak 2 hits 1 run scored; Scott Bellemare 2-run single. Jesse Veermich pitched 4 shutout innings.
Watertown Blaze 4 Amenia Monarchs 1
Watertown Blaze won their opening day game 4-1 over the Amenia Monarchs. The pitching staff led the way with Kyle Kennedy going 6 innings, striking out 8 and scattering 3 hits. Matt Quintana and Brooks Belter struck out 8 in 3 innings of scoreless relief. Tony Patane had 3 hits including 2 doubles and an RBI. Garrett DeLotto and Chris Comeau added 2 hits a piece for the Blaze. Matt Hosier tripled for Amenia.
Bethlehem Plowboys 7 Winsted Whalers 0
Pat O’Niell and Rob Geraci combined for a 3 hit shut out of the visiting Whalers. O’Niell finished the game with 11 Strikeouts. Bethlehem jumped out early scoring 3 runs in the first off Winsted start Austin Brochu. Mike Chiovitti (1-4 2B; RBI) plated Christian Callahan (3-4 RBI) with the first run with a double off the fence. Tony Geraci (4-4 2Rbi) followed with a two RBI single to cap off the scoring. Bethlehem will host Watertown next Sunday at 11 am.
Terryville Black Sox 16 Canton Crushers 3
Terryville got off to an all around great start to open up their Tri State season. Terryville collected 21 hits as a team that included 6 runs in the 4th inning. Matt Donofrio had 2 doubles along with Pat Norton 2-3 3rbi. Pat Mulcahy added a solo shot in the 7th. BILLY Armstrong threw 5innings of no hit baseball. Jim Sprito doubled for Canton.
Tribury Twisters 14 Litchfield Cowboys 9
The Tribury Twisters handed the defending champion Litchfield Cowboys an opening day loss with a 14-9 victory. Ben Guisto (4 innings) and Ben Brown (5 innings – win) carried the team on the mound. Chris Sutay homered for Tribury while James Thorpe (3 hits) and Brendan Bessetts (2 hits) lead the Twisters attack.
Torrington Rebels 4 Valley Thunder 1
The Torrington Rebels beat the Valley Thunder 4-1 on Sunday night. The Rebels were led by Dan Livingston, who threw a complete game 3-hitter, while striking out seven. Cody Lemieux, Travis Wyant, and Adam Fuoco all had hits for the Rebels.
Wolcott Scrappers 1 Naugatuck Dogs 0
Zach Sehnal threw eight innings striking out five while allowing 6 hits to lead Wolcott to an opening day win. Israel Lugo went 2-2 with a single and an RBI double in the bottom of the first scoring Joel Acosta for the only run of the game. Justin Koutros closed out the ninth for the save. Lance Stephens threw seven innings allowing seven hits and the one run taking the loss. Macky Cianciolo had three hits to lead the Dogs.
Brass City Brew 18 East Mountain Cougars 2
Brass City Brew opens up the season with a win versus the East Mountain Cougars at Hotchkiss Park on Sunday. Brew ended the game with 21 hits and 18 runs while the Cougars adding 4 hits and 1 earned run. Brew offense led by Fraz Kader going 5 for 5 and 2 RBI’s, Angel Bautista going 3 for 4 with 1 RBI. Homeruns in the game came off the bat of Dwight Wildman in the 3rd inning and Paul Novakowski added a pair of homeruns in the 4th inning and 7th inning this one being a grand slam. Joe Demming, Sam Merriman, Matt Wahl and Phil Wilhelmy adding a pair of hits each as well. Gary Novakowski picked up his first win of the season going 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. Cougars offense was led by Dylan Oaks knocking in Mike Martini in the 3rd inning. The Brew will host the Blaze, Friday May 27th at 5:45 while the Cougars play Winsted on Sunday.
Bristol Greeners 9 Burlington Hunters 4
The Bristol Greeners picked up an opening day victory on Sunday afternoon at Bristol Central High School against the Burlington Hunters. Bristol pieced the game together with solid pitching behind Tyler Cyr (3 IP, 0 runs, 4 K’S), Jerry Lapenta (4 IP, 2 ER’s, 4 K’s), and Troy Micale (2 IP, 3 K’s). Bristol opened the game up with a 7-run bottom of the fifth inning which was sparked by Jake Martel’s (1-3, 3 RBI) bases-clearing triple. Micale had three hits of his own on the day, while Tyler Bush and Cyr each collected two a piece. Burlington was led offensively by Ty Morin, Brady Hecht, Rey Torres, and Chris Rossi who all collected a pair of hits.
