Congratulations to the following teams who have qualified for the Tri-State league playoffs: Bethlehem Plowboys, Watertown Blaze, Brass City Brew, Wolcott Scrappers, Naugatuck Dogs, Waterbury Wild, Winsted Whalers, Amenia Monarchs, Bristol Greeners, Tri-Town Trojans, and Terryville Black Sox. Seeding is yet to be determined as we have a few games that will be made up immediately following the completion of the Stan Musial tournament. The final team to qualify for the league playoffs will be either the Tribury Pavers (1 game left vs. Brass City, must win or lose by 4 runs or less) or the Burlington Hunters.
Playoffs begin on Saturday, August 7th and Sunday, August 8th. Complete playoff bracket schedule will be posted on the website soon.
Tri-Town Trojans 8, Terryville Black Sox 1: Miles Scribner tossed a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Trojans over the Black Sox in Terryville. Steve Price collected three hits, including two doubles, a run scored and an RBI while Danny McCarty added two hits, a run scored and two RBI. Joe Bunnell had two hits and two RBI for Tri-Town. Kevin LaRose homered for Terryville.
Bethlehem Plowboys 3, Torrington Rebels 2: Aaron Granahan ripped an RBI double for the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning as Bethlehem won its 10th straight game to clinch the 2nd seed in the playoffs. Dave Fredlund doubled and Zack Milbourn won in relief and Tyler Erickson picked up the save for Bethlehem (18-4). Jerry Colon doubled for Torrington (7-15).
Waterbury Wild 5, Brass City Brew 3: Kody Kerski picked up his first of the season as the Wild defeated the Brew at Waterville Park. Kerski gave up four hits and had 10 strikeouts in six innings while also helping himself with two hits at the plate. Ken Kerski had two hits for the Wild (9-12). Josh Coleman had a two-run HR for the Brew (13-7).
Waterbury Wild 8, Litchfield Cowboys 4: Ken Kerski pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Wild took care of the Cowboys at Litchfield High School. Kevin Romero collected four hits while Kody Kerski chipped in with three hits for Waterbury (10-12). Ed Pequignot had two hits while Leland McKenna added a triple for Litchfield (9-13).
Litchfield Cowboys 5, Thomaston Spoilers 1: Ed Pequignot collected two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Cowboys over Thomaston at Community Field in Litchfield. Leland McKenna tossed five innings to pick up the win while Dylan Stiles added a hit for Litchfield. Gary Swierczynski had two hits for Thomaston.
Tribury Pavers 7, Bristol Greeners 6 (10 innings): Jamie Kimberly had two hits with two RBI, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to plate Andrew Jones with the winning run as Tribury knocked off Bristol at Nonnewaug High School. Jones finished with a hit and two runs scored while Brian Cyr added two hits and an RBI for Tribury (9-12). Drew Sgro had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI while Dan Rosa added two runs scored and Rex Cone had a HR and three RBI for Bristol.
Watertown Blaze 4, Naugatuck Dogs 1: The Blaze had a busy Sunday, finishing up a 16-inning tie game at Terryville with a 4-3 loss, then hustling down to Naugatuck’s Rotary Field for its regularly-scheduled game. With another make-up game left to play with Brass City, probably after the completion of this week’s Stan Musial State Tournament, the Tri-State League’s top playoff seeding remains in doubt. Bethlehem is currently a half game ahead, thanks to Watertown’s loss. Nevertheless, the Blaze attended to business in its second game of the day, with RBI from Mike Mastrocola (HR), Chris Ayer, Brian Lemay and Kyle Goldstein. The Blaze is 17-4, and Naugatuck falls to 12-9.
Burlington Hunters 7, Mazda Dodge Red Devils 4: The Burlington Hunters kept their playoff-qualifying hopes alive with a win at Lewis Mills High School Sunday. Matt Dablain smashed a 4-4 tie with a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning after an intentional walk loaded the bases for him. Josh LaMonte had a huge day going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Three other Hunters — Pat Flynn, Alex Hansen and Scott McIntyre — had two hits apiece. Kevin McCallum (2 hits), Tim Collins and Mike M’Sadoques all doubled for the Red Devils. Mazda Dodge finishes its season at 6-16 while the Hunters improve to 9-13, hoping a tie-breaker will sweep them into the Tri-State playoffs.
Winsted Whalers 1, Amenia Monarchs 0: Donny Crossman tossed a five-hit shutout as the Whalers ended the regular season with a 13-9 record. Crossman struck out seven and walked one, allowing just one Monarch to reach third base. Winsted scored the lone run of the game in the fourth inning when Joel Castillo scored on a passed ball. Castillo finished with two hits. Crossman was nearly matched by Amenia’s Joel Judson who allowed just two hits. He struck out seven and walked four. The Monarchs (12-10) got a pair of singles from Ken Shufelt.
