Terryville Black Sox 1, Torrington Rebels 0: Billy Armstrong tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out 13 as the Blacksox blanked Torrington. Dan Baccaro had a base hit to score Pat Norton for the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning for Terryville (10-9). Curtis Anthony had a single for the only hit for Torrington (7-13).
Tri-Town Trojans 5, Litchfield Cowboys 1: Steve Price had two hits, including a home run, and Nick Lahoud added two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Trojans at Community Field. Miles Scribner (7-3) allowed six hits and struck out five for the Trojans (11-9). Leland McKenna had two hits and a run scored for the Cowboys (8-11).
Winsted Whalers 2, Thomaston Spoilers 1: Charlie Putnam’s RBI single in the eighth scored Donnie Crossman with the winning run. Kaiden Pieszak had three hits for the Whalers (12-9). Adam Piechowski pitched a three-hitter and struck out six. Jacob Barbour scored for Thomaston (8-12).
Bethlehem Plowboys 7, Tribury Pavers 4: Nick Chiovitti had three hits and scored two runs, and Matt Parlato added two hits and two RBI to lead Bethlehem (16-4) at Nonnewaug High. Andrew Jones had two hits and three RBI for Tribury (7-12).
Bristol Greeners 14, Mazda Dodge Red Devils 3: The hometown Greeners (11-8) drove in five runs in both the second and sixth innings and came up with a 14-3 victory against the Mazda-Dodge Red Devils (6-14) at Muzzy Field Tuesday evening. Bristol’s Chris Klepps drove in a run in the first inning off a double that scored lead-off hitter Mike Zammett. In the second inning, the Greeners got five runs on four hits. Red Devil’s pitcher Pat O’Neal walked in a run with the bases loaded, and Zammett and Dan Rosa knocked in two RBI each. Bristol added two more runs in the third inning and another in the fourth before following up their only scoreless inning in the fifth with another five run explosion in the bottom of the sixth. The five run flurry in the sixth was ignited by a Matt Beaudoin double. Zammett drove a ball deep to right, but it was caught. With two outs, the next five batters reached base on a hit, and the runs just poured in.
“The bats are starting to come around,” said Bristol head coach Shawn Mirmina. “It’s nice to have big bats like Chris (Klepps) and Drew (Sgro).” Sgro was 2-4, doubled in the sixth, singled, scored two runs and batted in a run. Klepps was 3-4, doubled in the first, singled in the fourth and sixth, scored a run and batted in three. The offense was impressive for the Bristol team, who had 17 hits on 36 at bats, but team defense was excellent as well. Geoff Pierce got the win after pitching all seven innings and giving up just two hits. He had six strikeouts in all. After giving up a hit in the first frame, Pierce had four consecutive 1-2-3 innings with no hits allowed until the sixth. He only gave up one hit in the sixth, but a passed ball and two walked batters attributed to the three runs the Red Devils managed to score. “[Pierce] pitched well,” said Mirmina. “He’s been good all year.”
The Red Devils, out of Thomaston, only got production from shortstop Nick Curso. Curso’s triple in the sixth drove in two, and he scored off a passed ball by Mirmina on the next at bat. Though Thomaston batters were able to get good wood on the ball, Bristol infielders weren’t letting anything through. They had no errors for the game. Zammett at second base, Klepps at shortstop, and Doug Beaudoin at third base all fielded spectacular plays to get outs at first. “It’s nice playing at Muzzy,” said Mirmina, whose Greeners are now 8-1 at home, compared to 3-7 on the road.
With Tri-State playoffs starting in two weeks, Mirmina liked the way his team handled a weaker, at least record-wise, Red Devil team. “Good timing,” said Mirmina. “The bats are warmed up.”
