Bethlehem Plowboys 9, Winsted Whalers 7: Bethlehem scored three key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to hold off a pesky Winsted team at Gallop Field Sunday. The Plowboys led 4-0 entering the top of the seventh, but the Whalers cut that margin to 4-3. Bethlehem scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, only to see Winsted get one back in the eighth. Three Plowboy runs in the eighth made it 9-4, but the Whalers scored three in the ninth to make the game close. Kevin Petit had two hits and two RBI to led Bethlehem (12-4). Matt Parlato added two hits, including a double, while Dave Green drove in two runs. Tony Geraci also doubled for the Plowboys. Jason Krajeski got the win while Dave Fredlund picked up the save. Charlie Putnam had three hits and a run batted in to lead Winsted (9-8). Chester Warner added two hits and a run batted in while Zac Tuozzo doubled. Donny Crossman took the loss for the Whalers.
Watertown Blaze 4, Brass City Brew 3 (9 innings, continued from June 10 tie suspended by darkness): Watertown’s Chris Laliberte reached on a fielders’ choice in the top of the ninth inning of a continued game at Bucks Hill Park Sunday. Then Chris Ayer (2 hits, 2 RBI) hit a double to right field for the game-winning run. Dick DeSimone (3 hits, 2 RBI) batted the other Blaze runs in. Justin McCulloch (3 hits), Steve Carosella (2 hits), Mike Padovani (double) and Matt Wahl (double) were big hitters for Brass City. The Blaze improves to 14-2; Brass City falls to 10-4.
Brass City Brew 16, Prospect Hearts 4: Justin McCulloch, Mike Verroneau and Matt Wahl combined to drive in 11 runs in Brass City’s blowout win over Prospect at Bucks Hill Park. McCulloch went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, RBI double, four RBI, and two runs scored. Verroneau was 3-for-4 with a three-run double, four RBI, two runs scored, and a walk. Wahl went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer, two runs scored, and stolen base. Eric Rovinetti, Mike Padovani, Eric Gormley, Brian Stasaitis, and Sam Sirica each drove in runs for the Brew (11-4). Marc DiDominzio went the first six innings to pick up the win. Spenser Griffin and Dan Gugliotti each went 3-for-5 and combined to drive in three of the Hearts’ four runs. Gugliotti took the loss for Prospect (1-16).
Amenia Monarchs 4, Thomaston Spoilers 3: Brody Fontaine hurled a complete game as Amenia defeated Thomaston at Thomaston High School. Fontaine gave up three runs on seven hits, all singles. He struck out six. Joel Judson went 3-for-5 with a double while Matt Pomeisl added a triple. The Monarchs improve to 11-6. Gary Swierczynski had two hits for the Spoilers. Thomaston falls to 8-9.
Terryville Black Sox 5, Mazda Dodge Red Devils 2: Terryville’s Tyler Wenz (7 innings, 12 strikeouts, 6 hits, 2 earned runs) kept the Red Devils under control at the Eli Terry Middle School, while his offense took a 2-1 lead in the first inning, then pushed it to 5-1 before Mazda Dodge scored its final run in the top of the sixth. Kevin Larose, Dan Vacarro (RBI) and Pat Norton (RBI) each doubled and had two hits for the Black Sox, now 6-9. Derek Lemay had an RBI for Mazda Dodge, who falls to 4-11.
Burlington Hunters 4, Tribury Pavers 1: In a key Tri-State divisional game at Nonnewaug High School Sunday morning, the Hunters (7-8) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning behind Jimmy Spirito (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Steven Popp (2-for-4) and Matt Dablain (2-for-4). But the play of the game might have been defensive. Tribury scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, then loaded the bases, one out, on a walk, hit, and an intentional walk from starter Alex Hansen. Reliever Jay Pelletier came on to face the next batter, and induced a double-play grounder to end the threat. Then Spirito made sure of the win with a 2-run double in the top of the seventh. Nick Higley was 2-for-2 for the Pavers, now 6-8.
Watertown Blaze 4, Waterbury Wild 3: Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning Sunday at Watertown’s Deland Field, Waterbury complete-game pitcher Ken Kerski tied the game at bat (2 doubles) with a game-tying RBI only to have the game ripped away again in the bottom of the inning. Winning pitcher Jay Spear singled; Chris Laliberte tried to move him over, missing on two bunt attempts. Giving up on the short game, Laliberte hit a rocket to left field on the next pitch, sending Spear across the plate on a walk-off triple. Bitter pill for Kerski, but poetic justice for Spear. Spear entered the game as a relief pitcher in the top of the seventh after Kerski’s hit tied the score, leaving runners on first and third, no outs. Spear struck out the next two batters, then forced the final out on a fielder’s choice, preserving his own chance to score the winning run. Vic DeSimone had two hits, including a double for Watertown; Cody Kingsley had two hits for the Wild. Waterbury falls to 7-8; Watertown is a league-best 15-2.
Tri-Town Trojans 14, Bristol Greeners 1: Trojan hitters zoned in Sunday morning for 17 hits at Litchfield’s Community Field. Tri-Town scoring started with single runs in the first and second innings, built to three in the third and another in the fourth, then finally erupted for 8 runs in the sixth inning. Meanwhile, pitchers Miles Scribner (6 innings), Jon Conley (2 innings) and Conor Murray (one inning) held the Greeners (9-8) to one run in the fourth inning, five hits for the game. Tri-Town’s big hitters included Kyle Osolin (2-for-4, triple, 3 RBI); Landon Gardella (2-for-4, triple, RBI); Nick Lahoud (2-for-4, 2 RBI); Troy Kobelarz (2-for-4, RBI); Steve Price (2-for-4) and Jon Smart (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI). Chris Klepps drove in the Bristol run with a double. Tri-Town is now 7-8.
Litchfield Cowboys 3, Torrington Rebels 2 (8 innings, continued from June game suspended to darkness): Eddie Peguignot’s RBI single in the bottom of the 8th gave the Cowboys a walk-off win in this continuation game from a June contest suspended due to darkness. Litchfield improves to 6-9, while Torrington falls to 6-10.
Torrington Rebels 5, Litchfield Cowboys 0: Dave Alexander’s three-run homer keyed Torrington’s win over Litchfield at Fuessenich Park. In a game that followed the completion of an extra inning game from June, Dan Livingstone held the Cowboys to two hits. He struck out seven in a complete game.
