(Wednesday, June 30) Waterbury Wild 10, Burlington Hunters 3: Adam Roque pitched 6 innings of 4 hit ball with 2 strikeouts to lead the Waterbury Wild to a 10-3 victory over the Burlington Hunters in Tri-State action at Lewis Mills High School in Burlington. Sean Trafford picked up his 4th save with a 1 inning 1 strikout perfomance. Kevin Romero had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Brad DeVito maintained his 11 game hitting streak with a hit and a run scored. Kody Kingsley and Ken Kerski each added a hit and scored twice. Scott McIntyre accounted for all Burlington runs with a 3-run homer in the second. Waterbury moves to 7-5 and Burlington falls to 4-8.
Bristol Greeners 9, Litchfield Cowboys 6: Bristol improved to 8-4 on the season with a 9-6 win over the Litchfield Cowboys (4-8) on Tuesday evening. For Bristol, Mike Hay went five solid innings, allowing three runs while striking out 4. Dan Rosa picked up his third save of the season. At the plate, Bristol was led by Dan Rosa (2-4, 3 RBI), Dru Sgro (2-4, RBI), and Steve Ziogas (2-3, RBI). Ryan Dudzinski (1-3, RBI) recorded five stolen bases in the game. For the Cowboys, Eric Orcher had himself a day at the plate, going a perfect 4-4. Eddy Pequinot also collected 2 hits and an RBI, while Chris Beach added a 2-run double in the bottom of the sixth to make things interesting.
Amenia Monarchs 8, Torrington Rebels 4: For three innings at Torrington’s Fuessenich Park, the Tri-State League’s Torrington Rebels and Amenia Monarchs made extra innings seem likely; then the Monarchs pulled away in the third and complete-game winner Joel Judson made the move stick for an 8-4 Amenia win. “He did what he had to get done,” said Amenia coach Tom Downey. “I’ve seen him sharper, but he got it done.”
“I go to my off-speed pitches when it counts the most,” said Judson, an incoming senior at Division SUNY-New Paltz who’s had looks by scouts from the Indians and Braves. “His curve was his best pitch tonight,” said Torrington player/coach Curtis Anthony. “He threw it for strikes and it was his strike-out pitch.” Judson (7 innings, 3 earned runs, 6 hits, 4 walks) had 11 strikeouts in his complete-game win, but, for the first three innings, Torrington starter Brandon Cordani and the Rebels made it look like it would go down to the wire as a battle of left-handed pitchers. Judson, second in the batting order, doubled to left center in the first inning, then scored the game’s first run on a single by Tom Downey.
The Rebels got it back in the bottom of the inning. Tico Arcienega (2-for-3, 2 runs scored) led off with a walk, then scored on Omar Alcantara’s double after two strikeouts by Judson. Torrington followed Amenia’s lead again in the third. The Monarchs scored twice on hits by Bob Chatfield, Steve Lynehan, Judson (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored) and a sac fly by Downey. The Rebels got their pair, 3-3, in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a hit by Arcienega, an error and an RBI ground-out by Dave Alexander.
But, in a tale of two lefties, the Monarchs caught up with Cordani in the fourth; Judson and his curve got stronger.
Fourth-inning hits by Amenia’s Matt Hosier (double), Matt Pomeisl (2 RBI), Chatfield (2-for-2) and Lynehan, along with a walk, added up to three more runs for the Monarchs. Torrington got one more on a lead-off double in the fifth by Miguel Gonzalez, a hit by Arcienega and a double steal; that’s all Judson allowed.
Worse for the Rebels, Judson added to the haul at bat. He hit a solo rocket over the left center field fence in the top of the seventh inning, followed by a hard-scrabble run by Downey on a walk, two passed balls and a hit by Tom Moore. “We’re new together,” said Anthony, who’s assembled a core of talented newcomers to replace a large contingent of Rebel veterans who hung up their spikes this summer. In Amenia, Coach Downey celebrates the fact that his team has been through Connie Mack and Tri-State together long enough to be a veteran unit while most of his players are still under 25.
