Thomaston 16, Prospect 7: The Thomaston Spoilers and Prospect Hearts took their cues from Tuesday evening’s sloppy weather for six innings at Thomaston High School. In the end it was the Spoilers that emerged with a 16-7 victory in Tri-State baseball action. Each team had big innings on the scoreboard, but Prospect’s five-run first included four walks and just one hit. While Thomaston reliever Vinnie Ganz came in to gain control on the mound for the Spoilers, his offense had a seven-run second inning comprised of six walks and two hits. Sam McAvoy (2-for-3, RBI) and A.J. Kulak were the Hearts’ big hitters in the game, as the Spoilers out-hit Prospect just 7-6, in spite of the wide gap in the score. Roby McHugh (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Andy Romano (2-for-4, RBI) and Ganz (RBI) were Thomaston’s big hitters.
The Spoilers are 7-5; Prospect is 1-10.
Litchfield 2, Torrington 2: (tie) 7 innings – Game will be continued at future date.
The Torrington Rebels and the Litchfield Cowboys played to a 2-2 tie through seven innings Tuesday night as play was suspended due to a loss of daylight and increasing rainfall. Torrington pitcher Brandon Cordani (5 innings, 7 strikeouts, 6 hits, 3 walks) kept the Cowboys off the board after a shaky first inning. Two errors by the Rebels led to a quick two-run lead for Litchfield. But the deficit was promptly erased. Torrington’s Dave Alexander hit a shot to deep center field to drive the first Rebel home. He was then quickly plated by third baseman Curtis Anthony who reached on a throwing error. Six scoreless innings of baseball then followed. Cordani got himself into a few tough situations including a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Beach of Litchfield came to the plate with a chance to bust the game wide open for the Cowboys. He was dealt three consecutive balls, but was then sent back to bench on three straight strikes to end the inning and keep the score knotted, 2-2.
In the fifth inning, Beach came in as a relief pitcher for Litchfield and really made things tough for the Torrington offense. He went on to post six strikeouts and allow only one hit during his three innings of work. The Rebels also made a pitching change late in the game, bringing in Omar Alcontara at the start of the sixth inning. He went on to strike out two batters and surrender no hits and one walk. The weather was the biggest opponent for both of these teams to face, raining from the first pitch all the way through to the last, only to start an immediate downpour as both teams went out for a post-game handshake. Head umpire and Tri-State Baseball commissioner Ed Gadomski decided to call the game after the seventh due to the loss of daylight and the increasing rainfall. No official date has been given as to when the game will be finished.
All other Tri-State games rained out.
