Brass City Brew 4, Bristol Greeners 1: Bristol (4-2) took a one-run lead in the first inning, but winning pitcher Eric Gormley (9 innings, 5 hits, 5 strikeouts, 5 walks) held the Greeners in check the rest of the way. Brew hitters scored two runs in the second, then padded their lead with two more in the fifth. Steve Carosella (2-for-4, RBI), Eric Rovinetti (2-for-3, RBI), Mike Padovani (2-for-3, run scored) and Mike Verroneau (RBI) were big at the plate for Brass City, 6-1. Dan Rosa (2-for-3) and Shawn Mimina (2-for-4) led Bristol.
Winsted Whalers 4, Prospect 1: Prospect’s Mike Valente (9 innings, 6 strikeouts) and Winsted’s Dan Connelly (5 innings, 4 strikeouts) dueled for three scoreless innings, then the Whalers broke through for a pair of runs in the fourth. Prospect (0-7) scored a run in the top of the sixth, but Winsted pitchers Nate Lapointe (2 innings) and Adam Piechowski (2 inning, 6 strikeouts) had things under control, especially with two more Winsted runs in the eighth. Brenner Pieszak (2-for-3, 2 runs), Zack Tuozzo (2-for-4), Piechowski (double) and Lapointe (double) carried big sticks for the Whalers, 5-3.
Amenia Monarchs 14, Tribury Pavers 1: The Monarchs got their work done early at Amenia’s Doc Bartlett Field Sunday afternoon, scoring three in the first, six in the second and another three in the third. The big second inning featured two-run doubles by Matt Hosier (3 hits, 2 doubles, 4 RBI) and Tom Moore (2 hits), three singles and two walks. The Monarchs, who got two hits from Steve Lynhan, also benefited from four hit batters in the early innings. Tyler Elmore had two hits for the Pavers, who scored their lone run in the eighth, long after starting Amenia pitcher Brody Fontaine (5 innings) notched his win. Tribury is 3-5; Amenia, 4-3.
Thomaston Spoilers 8, Waterbury Wild 2: Joe Deming’s two-run triple keyed a three-run Spoiler outburst in the bottom of the first inning. The Wild came back for a run in the second and one more in the eighth, but Jacob Barbour (6 innings) and Vinny Ganz (3 innings) held the lead on the mound, while Mike McHugh (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and Tim Hamel (2-for-4, double) led the Spoiler attack for another run in the fifth and four more in the seventh and eighth. Brad DiVito was 2-for-3 for the Wild, now 4-4. Thomaston is 5-3.
Naugatuck Dogs 3, Wolcott Scrappers 2: The Dogs scored twice in the bottom of the first inning at Rotary Field Sunday evening, but Wolcott pitcher Justin Kutros (9 innings, 9 strikeouts, 1 walks, 2 hit batters) stopped it there. The Scrappers worked on Naugatuck pitcher Lance Stevens (9 innings, 11 strikeouts, 3 walks, 1 hit batter) for one run in the third and another in the seventh, locking the tie in at 2-2. Still deadlocked in the bottom of the ninth, Devin Murphy (2-for-3) was hit by a pitch; Matt Smalley reached on an error on his sacrifice attempt; then, with two outs, Kyle Faucher loaded the bases with a single. George Halamon came on with the winning RBI on an infield single. The Dogs are 3-5; Wolcott is 5-3.
Burlington Hunters 8, Mazda Dodge Red Devils 3: Burlington went out to a 5-0 lead after the first three and a half innings behind Jared Holtman (2-for-2, 2-run triple, 3 runs scored), Scott McIntyre (2-for-3) and Mike Morin (2-for-4). Kevin MacCallum (2-for-4) and Derek Lemay (RBI double) led the Red Devils back to a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the fourth. The Hunters weren’t done. They scored three more runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a Jimmy Spirito 3-run double, while Jay Pelletier (4 innings, Win) and Matt Arburr (3 innings, Save) kept the Red Devils in check for the rest of the game. Burlington goes to 2-5; Mazda Dodge is 1-6.
Bethlehem Plowboys 3, Watertown Blaze 0: The Plowboys won their seventh straight game behind a dominant performance from starter Jay Krajeski who allowed just one hit and struck out nine in nine innings. Bethlehem is now 7-2 after opening the season with two losses. Aaron Granahan had three hits for the Plowboys, while Tony Geraci had two hits (double) and two RBI. Matt Parlato chipped in with two hits and added an RBI. Bethlehem scored in the first inning on back-to-back doubles from Geraci and Parlato, then added two more in the eighth consecutive RBI singles from the same duo. Watertown is now 7-1 on the season after suffering its first loss.
