Wolcott’s Scrappers Pierre LePage drafted in the 13th round by the Chicago Cubs!
The second baseman for the Uconn Huskies was taken in the 13th round by the Chicago Cubs of the MLB draft on Tuesday. LePage, the No. 400 player picked, finished the season batting .327 for the Huskies while recording 81 hits, 63 runs scored and 57 RBI. He led the team with 20 doubles and struck out only three times during the year, which was an NCAA record. In 56 games played, the junior stole 29 bases in his 35 attempts and chipped in with 106 putouts and 173 assists at second base.
Torrington 8, Mazda Dodge 2: The Torrington Rebels wrenched an 8-2 win out of a tie Tri-State League ballgame with Mazda Dodge at Thomaston High School Tuesday evening. Trevor Bellemare (2-for-3) led the Red Devils to two runs in the third inning after Torrington scored once in the first and again in the top of the third. Torrington starter Chris Colon held it there through one more inning. Then Ian Pierce came in to hold Mazda down for the rest of the game while the Rebels came alive in the sixth and seventh for six more runs. In the top of the sixth inning, Torrington loaded the bases; Gerry Colon (2-for-3, run scored) swept them clean with a three-run double. Angelo Calabrese (RBI) was Torrington’s other big hitter in a perfect 3-for-3 evening. The Rebels even up at 4-4; Mazda Dodge is 1-5.
Wolcott 6, Tri-Town 3: Adam LaCapra pitched a complete game, striking out 12, as the Scrappers improved to 5-2 on the season. LaCapra surrendered just six hits and allowed single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings. He got plenty of support early as the Scrappers scored twice in the first and three times in the third. Offensively, Wolcott’s Jason Miller had a two-run double and Steve Bernier added a double and RBI. For the Trojans (3-4), Nick Lahoud and Steve Price each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Waterbury 7, TriBury 0: Ken Kerski pitch a complete game one-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Wild defeated the Pavers, 7-0, at Nonnewaug High School. Waterbury has now won three consecutive games by shutout. Chris Perrin and Fraz Kader each had a double and two RBI for Waterbury, while John DiGiovanni chipped in with a sacrifice and an RBI. Ross Allen had the lone hit for TriBury. Chris Doyle pitched five innings, giving up five hits with three strikeouts. Waterbury is now 4-3 and TriBury falls to 3-4.
Litchfield 3, Winsted 0: Kevin Murray and Kyle Robinson combined to throw a one hitter as Litchfield improved to 2-4 on the season. Offensively, Kevin Pequignut (double) and Chris Beach each had two hits for Litchfield. Charlie Putnam had the only hit for Winsted (4-3).
Thomaston 5, Terryville 4: The Spoilers improved to 4-3 on the season with the victory. Andy Romano went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while Joe Deming was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. For the Black Sox (2-5), Pat Mulcahy had a double and two RBI.
Brass City 5, Amenia 2: Eric Gormley went to 2-0 on the season after pitching his 2nd complete game allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, 5 hits, and 12 strike outs for the Brass City Brew. Brass City opened the scoring with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Paul Novakowski opened with a double and was driven in on a Mike Padovani rbi double. Padovani later scored from 3rd on a Mike Butkovic rbi fielder’s choice. After the Monarchs cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the 4th inning, the Brew answered right back with 2 in the bottom of the 4th inning. Mike Padovani scored on a Gary Novakowski double. After a wild pitched advanced G. Novakowski to 3rd base, Mike Butkovic legged out and slid into 1st to beat the throw for an rbi single. Brass City would add a 5th run in the bottom of the 5th on a error by Amenia’s left fielder, while Amenia could only muster up 1 more run in the top of the 6th on a Tom Moore rbi single. Brass City moved to 5-1 on the season, while Amenia dropped to 3-3.
Watertown 9, Naugatuck 0: Kyle Goldstein pitched a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts to earn the victory at Naugatuck High. Mike Mastrocola homered and drove in two, and Chris Ayer had a double, single and two RBI for the Blaze who improve to 7-0.
Bethlehem 12, Burlington 1: John Conlan (4 RBI) smashed two home runs and Aaron Granahan (3 RBI) had 3 hits to back the complete game six hitter by Tyler Erickson as the Plowboys won their 5th straight game to improve to 5-2 on the season. Tony Geraci added a double for Bethlehem. Jimmy Spirito had 2 hits including a double and Mike Morin doubled for Burlington (1-5).
