Winsted 10 Burlington 6
The Winsted Whalers got seven solid innings from Adam Piechowski in a 10-6 win over the Burlington Hunters at Lewis Mills High School Sunday. Piechowski gave up two runs on three hits, striking out 12. On offense, Ricky Langer went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, and two runs batted in. Joel Castillo was 3-for-4 while Dave Lumpkin added a double for Winsted (2-0). The Whalers broke the game open with six runs in the top of the sixth innings. Burlington (1-1) was led by Matt Arburr, who homered. Kyle Cruz was the losing pitcher.
Amenia 1 Naugatuck 0
Joel Judson outlasted Lance Stevens in a duel at Rotary Field. Both threw complete games, but Judson got help when Amenia’s Josh Woleski scored off of a throwing error in the top of the ninth. Woleski had reached on an error. Judson gave up just four hits and struck out nine. The Monarchs are 2-0. Lance Stevens pitched a stellar game for Naugatuck (0-2), giving up two hits and striking out 15. Kyle Faucher had two hits for the Dogs.“It was a pitcher’s duel,” Amenia manager Tom Downey said. “They both worked out of trouble.” Both teams made four errors in the game. Naugatuck has lost two 1-run games to open the season.
Litchfield 6 Thomaston 3
The Cowboys got solid days from Karl Quist and Eric Pesino in a win over the Spoilers at Thomaston High School. Quist went 3-for-4 with a double while Pesino was 2-for-4 with a triple. Kevin Murray picked up the win on the mound for Litchfield (1-1). Matt Gasperini took the loss for Thomaston (1-1). Louis Serrano paced the offense, going 1-for-4 with a double.
Waterbury 4 Bethlehem 3
The Wild held off the Plowboys at Waterville Park. Ken Kerski gave up one run on two hits in seven innings for the win. He struck out 13. Ken Kerski also had two hits, including a double. Sean Trafford pitched the final two innings for Waterbury (1-1). Brad DeVito (2 hits, 2 RBI), Cody Kingsley (2 hits, RBI), and Kyle Kerski each had two hits for the Wild. Dan Goscinski had a hit and RBI for Bethlehem (0-2). Rob Geraci pitched eight innings, giving up four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts in the loss. Bethlehem has lossed two 1-run games to open the season.
Watertown 7 Torrington 2
The Blaze spread out 10 hits in a win over the Rebels at Deland Field. John Lovietiere (double, single, 2 RBI), Alex Santopietro (double), and Chris Comeau (2-RBI single) led the way for Watertown, which improves to 2-0. Comeau’s single made it 7-2 in the fifth inning. Tyler King picked up the win for the Blaze. Chris Ayer kept the game scoreless in the third inning by throwing out a Torrington runner at home from center field. Matt Marola tripled and drove in two runs while Tico Arcienega doubled for the Rebels in their first game of the day.
Torrington 8 Tri-Town 3
In their second contest of the day, the Rebels got a first-inning grand slam from Dave Alexander in a win over the Trojans at Fuessenich Park. Darren Gould went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Tico Arcienega was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, and a run scored. Dan Livingstone started for Torrington (2-1) and pitched five scoreless innings for the win. Nick Lahoud went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Kyle Osolin reached base three times (3 walks) and scored a run for Tri-Town. The Trojans fall to 1-1.
Brass City 5 Wolcott 1
The Brew got a complete game from Eric Gormley in a win over the Scrappers at Municipal Stadium. Gormley gave up one unearned run on five hits, striking out nine while walking only one. Steve Carosella led the Brass City (1-1) bats, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Justin McCulloch went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and run batted in while Josh Coleman went 1-for-4 with a run batted in and a stolen base. Eric Rovinetti drove in a run for the Brew with a sacrifice fly. Gary Miller went 3-for-4 with a run scored for Wolcott (1-1). Steve Bernier drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Justin Cuzio took the complete-game loss for the Scrappers.
Tribury 12 Prospect 5
The Turkey Vultures scored runs in six different innings on the way to a win over the Hearts at Nonnewaug High School. Eric Villanova had three hits, scored twice, and drove in two runs for Tribury (1-1). Winning pitcher Brian Cyr (2 hits, 2 runs) and Tim Rose (triple, run scored) each drove in two runs while Russ Stutsky doubled for the Turkey Vultures.Cem McAvoy had two hits while Dan Gugliatti doubled for Prospect. Mike Valente took the loss for the Hearts (0-2).
Mazda Dodge 3 Terryville 2
The Red Devils spaced out runs over the second, third, and seventh innings in a win over the Black Sox at Thomaston High School. Scott Bellemare led Mazda Dodge (1-1), going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Jay LaFontaine went 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI. Mike M’Sadoques picked up the win in relief, giving up two hits while striking out five in 3 1/3 innings. Pat Norton went 2-for-3 with a run batted in for Terryville (0-2). Kenny Martinik took the loss. Terryville has lossed two 1-run games to open the season.
