Thomaston 6 Tribury 4
I did the Thomaston-Tribury game today, really impressive moment of silence for Chris Caron. Almost lost it when Thomaston gathered around Chris’ jersey before they took the field. Pretty powerful moment. He was a great guy… – umpire John Bennett
The Thomaston Spoilers scored five runs in the fifth inning to take control against the Tribury Turkey Vultures.
Thomaston’s Joe Deming earned the win with seven strong innings before Matt Gasparini closed out the final two innings. Al Maki pitched seven innings for the Turkey Vultures. Tribury’s Jamie Kimberly had a huge day at the plate with a home run, double and three RBI. For Thomaston, Louis Serrano had a double and two hits, while veteran Gary Swierczynski chipped in with three hits.
Bristol 8 Mazda Dodge 6
Bristol pounded out 18 hits to take the season opener against the Red Devils. For the Greeners, Dan Rosa (4-5 2 2B, 3B, 2 RBI), Doug Beaudoin (3-5 2 3B, 2 RBI), and Matt Beaudoin (3-4 2 RBI) led the offense, while Geoff Pierce threw 5 innings of one-run ball striking out 8. Mazda Dodge made it a two-run game in the bottom of the 7th with key two-out hits by Trevor Bellemare (1-3 2 RBI) and Brian Brandt (1-2 2 RBI). With the Red Devils down by two with bases loaded and two-outs in the bottom of the ninth, Rosa was able to record a strikeout to end the game. Pierce and Nick Cote each had a pair of hits for the Greeners. Tim Collins and Will Sirotnac each had doubles for the Red Devils.
Amenia 8 Terryville 7 (10 innings)
The Amenia Monarchs scored four runs in the eighth inning to knot the score, then scored the game-winner on a wild pitch in the 10th to defeat the Terryville Black Sox, 8-7. Jim Pomesil, who entered the game in the ninth inning, picked up the win on the mound. His brother, Matt Pomesil, led the Amenia offense with a pair of singles, while Ken Shufelt added a pair of hits, including a double.
Torrington 3 Brass City 2
Brandon Cordani tossed a complete game gem as Torrington defeated the Brass City Brew, 3-2, on season-opening Sunday of the Connecticut Tri-State Baseball League. Cordani went all nine innings, striking out eight while allowing just three hits. The Brew scored single runs in the first two innings, highlighted by a solo homer from Justin McCullough in the opening frame. Torrington, which played error-free ball, bounced back with three runs in the third, and Cordani made that one-run lead stand up the rest of the way. Torrington was led at the plate by Omar Alcontoro, John Nowack and Curtis Anthony who each had two hits. Sean Keegan pitched the first six innings for Brass City and took the loss.
Watertown 13 Litchfield 4
Watertown plated six runs in the sixth inning to break away for the victory against the Litchfield Cowboys.
Alex Sanatpietro picked up the win on the mound, striking out eight batters in his six innings of work. Chris Comeau pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game. Offensively, Comeau had a big day for Watertown with three hist and a pair of RBI, while Connor McEvoy added three hits and two RBI. Litchfield was paced by Chris Beach and Ed Pegeneaut who each had a pair of hits.
Winsted 5 Bethlehem 4
At Walker Field, the Winsted Whalers plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a bases-loaded hit batsmen to defeat the Bethlehem Plowboys, 5-4. The Whalers trailed 4-0 before knotting the score with a run in the fifth, and three more in the sixth. Adam Piechowski (three innings six strikeouts) relieved Whaler starter Donny Crossman in the sixth inning to pick up the win. Dave Lumpkin and Zack Tuozo each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Winsted offense. Jason Krajeski started for the Plowboys and was relieved by Rob Garaci in the sixth. Bob McMahon singled, drove in two runs, and scored once.
Wolcott 3 Waterbury 0
Wolcott’s Omar Taveras pitched eight innings of scoreless ball, striking out 10 as the Scrappers blanked the Waterbury Wild, 3-0. Justin Koutros pitched the ninth to close things out. Ken Kerski (two hits at the plate) allowed just two hits over five innings for the Wild before being relieved by Adam Roque (sixth and seventh), and Sean Trafford (eight and ninth). Steve Bernier had a two-run single single in the sixth inning for Wolcott, while Ryan Soucy finished with two walks and two runs scored.
Burlington 19 Prospect 10
The Burlington Hunters came out strong offensively as they defeated Prospect by nine runs. Jimmy Spirito earned the win for the Hunters, striking out six over his five innings of work. Burlington’s Matt Arburr was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three walks and three RBI to pace the Burlington offense. Adam Peters also shined with three hits and five RBI, while Scott McIntyre was 4-for-6 with two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Justin Campbell and Steve DuBois added two hits apiece, while Mike Morin added a double. For Prospect, Mike Valente, Chris Valente and Spencer Griffin each had a pair of hits.
Tri-Town 4 Naugatuck 3
A ninth inning Joe Bunnell homer broke a tie for a 4-3 Tri-Town win. Tri-Towns Connor Murray (7 strikeouts) and Naugy’s Lance Stevens pitched goose-eggs for the first three innings. Then Naugatucks Devin Murphy hammered a two-run home run in the fourth inning, earning an early lead for the Dogs. Stevens sailed until the top of the sixth. Then Tri-Towns Jon Smart swung the lead back to the Trojans with a three-run single. The Dogs tied it up again in the bottom of the inning. Relieverd Myles Scribner (Tri-Town) and Dan Karpuc (Naugatuck) started the seventh to freeze the score, 3-3. They succeeded until Bunnell sent a homer into the night in the top of the ninth. Scribner (7 K’s) got the win with one more shutout effort in the bottom of the ninth.
