Wamogo Regional High School graduate Carl Rivers was inducted into the Western Connecticut State University Athletic Hall Of Fame recently. Rivers, a 1999 Wamogo graduate, had an outstanding four-year career pitching for Western’s baseball team. He is the school’s career leader in appearances (60), innings pitched (248.2), and strikeouts (276). His 14 wins are third in school history and his 10 saves fifth. Rivers holds single-season records in appearances (20), innings pitched (87.2), strikeouts (100), and saves (5).
The left-hander was a two-time All-New England Division III third team selection and was Western’s male scholar-athlete of the year in 2002. He helped lead Western to the Little East Conference Championship and an NCAA tournament berth in 2002. A power pitcher, Rivers finished second nationally in strikeouts per nine innings as a sophomore, junior, and senior. In 2003, his 100th and final strikeout came against the last batter he faced. Rivers has spent the past eight summers pitching for the Litchfield Cowboys of the Tri-State League.
