Winsted 7, Waterbury 1
The Whalers’ complete-game winner Donny Crossman (1 unearned run, 9 hits, 13 K’s, 2 walks) blanked the Wild for the first six innings at Waterville Park Sunday while Winsted teammates Rob Jasmin (3-for-4), T.J. Monka (2-for-4, RBI) and Ricky Langer (double) joined Crossman (2-for-4, 2 RBI) in leading a 14-hit attack to a 5-0 lead. Chris Perrin (2-for-4) was the Wild’s big hitter as Waterbury posted its lone run in the seventh. Then the Whalers tacked on two more in the top of the ninth.
Brass City 15, Burlington 8
Paul Novakowski went 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, two singles, two RBI and two runs scored for the Brew (11-2). Eric Gormley added two hits and two RBI while Eric Rovinetti contributed two hits and three runs scored, Mike Padovoni had two hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Burlington (9-5) received two hits apiece from Adam Peters and Steve Dubois. Brass City got out front, 9-3, in the first three innings. Then the Hunters came to life for another four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. But relievers Dave Vadnais and Marc DiDominzio (2 innings apiece) shut down the Burlington bats after five innings, while the Brew kept on churning for single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and two each in the fifth and seventh.
Wolcott 6, Bethlehem 5
Justin Koutros threw 5 and 2/3 solid innings allowing 3 earned runs out of 5 total all in the 6th inning. Steve Bernier had the game winning double in the bottom of the sixth. Adam LaCapra had a single, double, RBI and run scored. LaCapra also came in and retired the final four batters in order to get the win. Sam Iverson went the distance and also had the game tying 2-run double in the top of the sixth in his only at-bat of the game.
Wolcott 2, Litchfield 0
Omar Taveras threw a 4-hit shutout with 13 K’s. Eddie Belval had 2 hits, while Adam LaCapra had a hit and a run scored. Colin Pratt had 2 hits for Litchfield. Chris Beach went the distance for Litchfield, striking out 10.
Thomaston 11, Farmingbury 2
The Spoilers scored all 11 of their runs in a marathon first inning at Thomaston High School Sunday, then played defense for the next seven innings while the Long Shots scored single runs in the fifth and seventh on just three hits for the game. Thomaston pitchers Jacob Barbour (4 2/3 innings, 7 strikeouts), Ramon Santiago (1 1/3 innings, 3 strikeouts) and Brandon Yancik (1 inning, 3 strikeouts) kept Farmingbury hitters at bay all game. Meanwhile, Thomaston’s first inning may ring in the Longshots’ ears for months. Rob McHugh (2-for-4, 2 RBI); Matt Gasperini (2-run single); Joe Deming (2-run double) and Tim Hamel (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the charge as the Spoilers (6-9) got their runs on seven hits, three Farmingbury errors, three walks and a hit batter. Adam Marco was 2-for-4 for the Longshots (0-15); Sean Wells had Farmingbury’s only other hit.
Amenia 5, Tribury 3 (13 innings)
The Monarchs out-hit the Pavers 16-5 at Nonnewaug High School in a three-and-a-half-hour marathon Sunday afternoon. But the key hits refused to come for Amenia in a 3-3 deadlock until the top of the 13th, when Travis Hyatt (walk), Jim Pomeisl (double) and Jeff Pomeisl (2-run single) finally teamed up to break the dam. Before that, led by Joel Judson (4-for-5, 2 doubles); Tom Downey (3 hits); Jeff Pomeisl (3 hits); Ken Schufelt (double) and Jim Pomeisl (double), Amenia took a one-run lead in the first, but had to play catchup when the Pavers scored two in the fourth and one in the seventh. While Bob Chatfield (7 innings) and Jim Pomeisl (5 innings) kept Tribury hits to a minimum, the Monarchs pushed across the runs they had to have, but no more. They scored the tying two runs in the top of the eighth, then left the bases loaded in the ninth and 12th en route to stranding 22 runners for the day. All of it was worthwhile when the runs finally came in the top of the 13th, while reliever Jim Pomeisl and the defense held fast once again in the bottom of the inning. The Monarchs are now 7-5; Tribury is 7-7.
Torrington 4, Naugatuck 1 (10 innings)
At Naugatuck’s Rotary Field Sunday, the Rebels and Dogs spotted each other a single run apiece in the first inning, then settled back for an all-out pitching duel between Torrington veteran Dan Livingston (complete-game win) and Naugatuck’s Lance Stevens, only recently released by the Bridgeport Bluefish. With a string of zeroes behind them, Stevens sat down after nine innings, but Livingston trucked on. That was the key for Torrington’s Matt Marola (2-for-4, 2 runs scored); Tom Spirito (2-for-5); and Curtis Anthony (2-for-5, RBI), leading the charge for three runs in the top of the 10th. Ultimately, Jeremy Lovato forced in the go-ahead run with a walk. Then Darren Gould hit a two-run single to seal the win. Bob Augelli put Naugatuck on the board with a home run in the first inning; Ryan Nelson was 2-for-3 for the Dogs. Torrington is now 5-9; Naugatuck is 5-8.
