Litchfield 5, Waterbury 4
Litchfield’s Tri-State League Baseball team took advantage of Waterbury Wild mistakes to win 5-4 at Community Field Thursday evening. In a game in which the Wild’s Ken Kerski (6 innings, 12 strikeouts, 0 earned runs) and Cowboys’ Ben Murphy (6 innings, 4 strikeouts, 1 earned run) and Chris Beach (1 inning, 2 strikeouts) held their opposition to five hits apiece, defense (or its absence) dictated the outcome. By the end of three innings, the score was tied 4-4 and just one run (by Waterbury) was earned. Each team had one big hitter — Chris Perrin for Waterbury (2-for-3, triple) and Kyle Weaver for Litchfield (2-for-3) — but, ultimately, the winning Cowboy run came on one more Waterbury error, in the fifth inning. Dylan Stiles (1 hit, run scored) was also a factor for Litchfield. The Cowboys are 8-4; Waterbury is 3-7.
Thomaston 7, Terryville 3
Complete-game winner Matt Gasperini gave up no free passes, while his defense held Terryville (3-7) scoreless for the first four innings at Terryville High School. Meanwhile, Thomaston (4-9) bats were busy. Andy Romano (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Jacob Barbour (2-for-3, RBI), Doc Hobbs (RBI) and Joe Deming (double) led the Spoilers to three runs in the second inning, single runs in the third and fourth and a final pair in the fifth. Tyler Wenz (2-for-3) and Matt Gardner (2-run HR) led the Black Sox on a come-back try in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Thomaston lead stayed put.
Bristol 6, Mazda Dodge 5
The Bristol Greeners improved to 10-4 in their inaugural season in the Tri-State League behind a strong pitching outing by Dan Rosa (7 innings, 6 hits, 3 strikeouts). Doug Beaudoin (1-3, double, 2 RBIs) and Matt DiVinere (1-3, RBI) each had big hits for the Greeners, who tied Mazda Dodge 2-2 after three innings, then exploded for four runs in the fourth. The Red Devils were led by Chris Ayer’s two hits in a game with just six hits for each team. Mazda Dodge scored a pair of runs in the second inning; then, behind 6-2, Mazda Dodge (6-7) tried to play catchup with single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Amenia 9, Naugatuck 7
Naugatuck led 7-6 after five innings at Amenia’s Doc Bartlett Field, but Monarch reliever Andrew Wolinski had the Dogs scoreless for the final three innings. While Wolinski held the Dogs at seven runs, Jeff Pomeisl and Tom Downey made the most of their opportunities in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on first and second, Pomeisl batted in the tying run. Then Downey crushed a two-run triple for the lead. Naugatuck (5-7) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Wolinski induced a pop fly for the final out. John Tenn homered for Naugatuck. Amenia is 6-5.
Brass City 4, Wolcott 1
A pitcher’s duel seized a chilly summer’s night under the lights of Waterville Park late Thursday night as the Wolcott Scrappers fell to the Brass City Brew 4-1. Both starting pitchers seemed to be untouchable for a better part of the night, neither showing any signs of letting up. In the end, a two out rally proved to be enough for Brass City to take the victory. Sean Keegan for Brass City pitched 6 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits and striking out 10 to earn his 5th win on the season, While Mike Padovani would strkie out 2 for the save in the 7th. Sal Messina for the Wolcott Scrappers pitched 5 innings allowing 3 hits 4 runs, 3 earned, and striking out 12. Wolcott jumped on the board in the second inning. A lead off walk and an error on a swinging bunt allowed runners on 1st and 2nd. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position with no outs. Steve Bernier drove the ball into center field for a sac fly and Wolcott’s only run of the night. This was the only kink in the armor for the Brew’s Sean Keegan. The Brew would have to wait and be patient against Messina, who seemed to be cruising up to the 5th. In the 5th an error, a walk, and a few stolen bases allowed runners to reach second and third with 2 outs. Steve Carosella drove a 2 run single up the middle for the Brew and a 2-1 lead. A wild pitch, a walk, and stolen base put runners on second and third again for Brass City’s Eric Rovinetti. Rovinetti followed Carosella with a similar 2 run single, which resulted in the eventual 4-1 victory for the Brass City Brew.
Bethlehem 9, Farmingbury 1
Dave Fredlund picked up his 2nd win of the year. Nick Chiovetti had 3 hits and 2 RBI, Jon Conlan 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Tony Geraci added a double to lead the Plowboy attack. Don Marco doubled for the Longshots.
Winsted 1, Tri-Town 0
Dan Connelly threw a complete game 2-hit shutout. Jason Patrick went the distance for Tri-Town throwing only 57 total pitches taking the hard-luck loss.
