Bristol 8, Thomaston 3
A sacrifice fly, a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and five stolen bases to go along with four Spoiler errors paved the way to an 8-3 Bristol win. It didn’t take long for the Greeners to put that recipe for success into motion as they jumped on top of Thomaston in the bottom of the first. Mike Zammett quickly turned his leadoff walk into a double as he swiped second on the first pitch to the next Bristol batter. Ryan Dudzinski proceeded to smack a single to center to put runners on the corners with no one out. The Greeners grabbed a 1-0 lead before Thomaston starter Mike Hay threw another pitch. Dudzinski intentionally strayed too far off first, forcing Hay to step off the mound and turn his attention away from the runner on third. As Dudzninski was working his way into a pickle, Zammett broke for the plate, ultimately sliding in safely. As a result, Dudzinski not only reached second but continued on another 90-feet as the throw to the plate got past the Thomaston catcher. The extra base proved costly as Drew Sgro completed Dudzinski’s trip around the bases with a sacrifice fly to left to provide Bristol with the early two run advantage.
Geoff Pierce made sure the Spoilers didn’t have a quick response. Thomaston went quietly in both the second and third against the Bristol hurler. Only two Spoilers reached off Pierce in the opening three frames — both via a Greener error. The first Thomaston hit didn’t come until the fourth as Gary Sweirczynski broke up the no-hitter with a solid double to the gap in right-center. Sweirczynski later scored on a fly out from Timmy Hamel. In the second, Ryan McDonnell led off the frame with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Shawn Mirmina ground out, and, now with two outs and a full-count on the No. 10 batter, broke for home. With his steal of the plate, the Greeners extended their lead to 3-0. A double from Sgro (2-for-3), back-to-back singles from Doug Beaudoin (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Dan Rosa to go along with a Spoiler error, and suddenly, by the time the fourth inning came to a close, that lead had grown to 5-0. On a two-out single from Rob McHugh, Thomaston made it clear it wasn’t about to go down without a fight. The McHugh single plated two to cut the margin to 7-3. Rosa came in and slammed the door shut on Thomaston the rest of the way. The Bristol reliever allowed just one hit in his two innings of work to preserve the win. “Geoff pitched a great game and then Rosa came in and does what he always does,” head coach Shawn Mirmina said. The Greeners out-hit the Spoilers 9-4 for the game.
Bristol 3 Torrington 1
The Greeners jumped on Rebel’s pitcher B. Cordoni early for three runs in the first inning with base hits from Ryan Dudzinski, Dru Sgro, Doug Beaudoin, and Dan Rosa. Cordoni then settled down to pitch five scoreless innings, striking out 7 along the way. Rich Bianchi went the distance for Bristol, allowing just two hits (J. Colon 2-2,BB) hits and striking out eight. For the Greeners, Shawn Mirmina went 2-2 in the game with a stolen base.
