Bethlehem 4, Brass City 2
The Plowboys scored three times in the third inning for the victory at Bethlehem’s Gallup Field. Sam Iverson notched the win for Bethlehem, allowing six hits as he improved to 3-0. Eric O’Toole and Jose Ortiz paced the Plowboys’ attack. O’Toole had two hits and two RBIs while Ortiz chipped in with a two-run double. Gary Novakowski took the loss for Brass City. Steve Carosella led the Brew with three hits, including a solo homer. The Plowboys improved to 7-1 while Brass City fell to 7-2.
Thomaston 4, Torrington 2
In a pitchers’ duel at Thomaston High School, the Spoilers out-hit the Rebels 5-4, but it took some extra help to make the hits count, on both sides. Torrington scored first with a run in the top of the fifth, but complete-game Rebel pitcher Dan Livingston hit a glitch in the bottom of the inning. A walk, error and hit batter loaded the bases. Thomaston’s Mike Schenkel got two of the runners in with a single. Then Bob Hay (2-for-3) put two more across with a double. Spoiler starter Matt Gasperini hit his own caution zone in the top of the eighth, walking three batters with just one out. Torrington’s Darrin Gould got one run in on a fielder’s choice. Matt’s brother, Anthony Gasperini, came in to bail his older brother out of the jam, then close it out in the ninth. Torrington is 4-5. The Spoilers are 2-5.
Naugatuck 10, Winsted 1
The Dogs outhit the Whalers 16-6 for the win at Winsted’s Walker Field. Ryan Nelson led the Naugatuck assault with a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two RBI. Bob Augelli added three hits, including a double, for the Dogs while Trent Levin and John Tenn had two hits and an RBI each. Charlie Putnam paced Winsted with two hits and an RBI. Lance Stevens went eight innings to notch the win, improving to 3-0. He allowed just three hits while striking out seven and walking five. Dan Connelly pitched into the sixth inning to take the loss.
Terryville 4, Farmingbury 1
In a game with just nine hits (5-4, Farmingbury), the Black Sox made the most of theirs, plus three errors by the Longshots. While Terryville’s A.J. Thomas (3 innings) and Dave Alicorn and Farmingbury’s Dan Marco (6 innings) and Dave Antinucci kept hits down on both sides, the Black Sox pushed two runs across in the first inning, then single runs tin the fifth and seventh. The Longshots, now 0-8, scored their only run in the fourth. Dan Vaccaro had a double for the Black Sox, who improved to 2-5.
Burlington 10, Amenia 3
Burlington bats brought scoring punch in bunches at Amenia Park. The Hunters (8-2) scored three runs in the first, five in the seventh and two in the ninth, behind Jimmy Spirito (3-for-6, double, 2 RBI), Jay McCluskey (2-for-2, 2 RBI), Jared Holtman (2-for-5, 2 RBI), Sean Shanley (2-for-4, RBI) and Jay Pelletier (2-run single). Spirito (7 strikeouts, 3 walks) earned the complete-game win for the second-place Hunters. Jeff Pomeisl (2-for-4), Ken Shufelt (2-run double) and Tom Moore (RBI single) put up a run in the first and two in the eighth for the Monarchs, now 4-3.
