Wolcott 7, Winsted 0
Sal Messina tossed a no-hitter as Wolcott picked up their 2nd victory of the season. Starting against one of the league’s veteran aces, Winsted’s Donny Crossman, and last years league champions, Messina struck out 16 of the 21 batters he faced. The Scrappers jumped on Crossman for four runs in the bottom of the third inning with Adam LaCapra coming thru with the big hit that inning. Wolcott’s Mike Perugini (2 hits) and Ryan Soucy (RBI single, run scored) were the other big guns in a nine-hit Wolcott offense that produced another run in the fourth and one in the fifth. Winsted’s Dan Connelly closed the door on Wolcott pitching a scoreless sixth inning but Messina kept the door barred against Whaler offensive hopes right thru the seventh.
Burlington 8, Litchfield 2
Jimmy Spirito narrowly missed a no-hitter as the Hunters improved to 4-0 with the win over the Cowboys a Community Field in Litchfield. Spirito gave up just one hit while striking out eight and walking just one to improve to 2-0. The hit for the Cowboys came in the fourth inning when Colin Pratt’s fly ball to right field was overrun, dropping in for a two-run double. Steve Dubois paced the Burlington offense with four hits, including three doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Scott McIntyre added three hits, including two doubles, scored twice and drove in two. Ben Murphy took the complete-game loss for Litchfield.
Torrington 4, Terryville 0
Matt Harrington hit a two-run double to key a 4-0 Torrington Rebels win over the Terryville Black Sox in a Tri-State Baseball League game at Fuessenich Park Thursday evening. While Brandon Cordani (6 innings, 4 hits, 10 strikeouts) and Scott Gelormino kept the Black Sox to four hits and no runs, the Rebels got on the board early, then coasted to the win. Torrington scored on an error in the first inning. Then, with timely hits by Angelo Calabrese (RBI single) and Curtis Anthony (2-for-3, run scored), the Rebels and Harrington piled up three runs in the second inning to build their stake. On a slick playing surface, Torrington backed up its pitchers with error-free defense.
Brass City 6, Farmingbury 1
Willy Ramos was the do-everything hero in Brass City’s win over Farmingbury at Waterbury’s Municipal Stadium. Ramos, Brass City’s complete-game pitcher (6 innings, 3 hits, 9 strikeouts, 3 walks) in a game shortened to six innings by darkness, started the game slightly off the mark, then spent the rest of the game making up for it in a big way. The first-inning “miscue” was a walk to Farmingbury’s Dan Jeter. Jeter stole second and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 Longshot lead. It didn’t last long. Ramos (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Steve Carosella. With Mike Butkovic (2-for-3, RBI, run scored) and Mike Padovani (RBI double) adding more firepower, the Brew took the lead in the third inning, 2-1. Ramos seemed to put it on ice with a two-run double in the fourth; then Butkovic batted in the last of a pair the next inning, 6-1. But Derek Tamulonis led off with a hit for Farmingbury in the top of the sixth; a walk and an infield hit loaded the bases. That’s when Ramos had one more heroic moment. With the bases loaded, no outs, he pitched strike-out, pop-up, strike-out to end the game.
Amenia 3, Thomaston 2
Coach Tom Downey Sr. used a committee of two lefties and two righties on the mound at Amenia’s Doc Bartlett Field to stay even, 2-2, with the Spoilers through six and a half innings. Then the Monarch’s Adam Lyman started the final surge, in the bottom of the seventh, with a one-out base hit. Three walks in a row in a light mist in Amenia brought Lyman home with the winning run. Shawn McGee doubled for Thomaston; Matt Hosier had one for the Monarchs.
Waterbury 9, Naugatuck 7
Waterbury came back from a 6-0 deficit in this game before it was called due to darkness after 6 full innings at Waterville Park. Waterbury was led by Bobby Wilcher (4-for-4, 3 runs), Jim Caporale (2-for-3, 3 runs), Bill Finlay (1-for-1, 2 BB, 1 HBP, winning RBI) and Fraz Kader who threw 5 innings allowing 4 hits and 2 runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI. Naugatuck was led by Ryan Russell (1 hit, 3 runs) and Bob Augelli (1 hit, 2 runs)
