Winsted 7, Torrington 1
Jay Levesque had the big hit (a two-run single) in Winsted’s huge fifth inning to break away from Torrington for a 7-1 final score before darkness ended a Tri-State Baseball duel of past league champions. Winsted’s Toby Nylin (5innings, 3hits, 1run, 7K’s) and Jorge Pimental held the Rebels to just 3 hits in the game, shortened by darkness after 6 innings. Curtis Anthony, pitching a complete game for Torrington, was almost as effective on the scoreboard for four innings. Behind a pair of doubles (intentional walk) from Winsted’s Ricky Langer, the Whalers put up single runs in the first two innings. The Rebels’ Jerry Colon and Angelo Calabrese almost balanced the scale with doubles for Torrington; the Rebels scored in the top of the fifth, 2-1. That was the signal for the Whaler fireworks. Five runs poured across in the bottom of the fifth. Homegrown Whaler pitcher Pimental blanked the Rebels in the top of the sixth, darkness finally closed the curtains.
Tribury 5, Thomaston 3
Thomaston had one big inning – all three of its runs – in the fourth against Tribury’s Chris Doyle (4 innings) and John Sharkey. The Pavers by contrast, came slow and steady against Spoiler pitchers Matt Gasparini (5 innings) and Mike Hay – a run in the first, another in the third, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth. Jordan Kershaw (2 hits, 2 runs scored, RBI) was the Pavers big hitter. Andrew Conlan, Andrew Jones, and Craig Prasauckus backed him up with an RBI single apiece. Jamie Kimberly doubled and scored. Gasperini (2 hits, 2 runs scored) and Tim Hamel (2 hits, double, RBI) did the most damage for Thomaston.
Amenia 4, Mazda Dodge 1
The Monarchs Travis Hyatt was in control after the first inning when the Red Devils put their only run across the plate. In spite of out hitting Amenia 6-3, the Red Devils 1-0 lead was short lived. While the Monarchs played inspired defense behind Hyatt (3 double plays), Amenia’s offense managed to score twice in the second inning, then put up two more in the fifth. Mike Caballo took the complete-game loss for Mazda. Red Devil Kieth April (2-3) was the games only multiple hitter.
Tri-Town 4, Wolcott 3
Wolcott complete game pitcher Sal Messina blasted a two-run homer to right center at Litchfield’s fence-less Community Field, but still took the loss, as Trojans pitchers Andrew Osolin (5 innings) and Connor Murray out-lasted him on the mound. Tri-Town rode a three-run second inning, capped by John Conley’s two-run single, into the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead. Tri-Town scored the eventual winning run on a throwing error in the sixth.
Bethlehem 3, Waterbury 2
Bethlehem used an effective committee on the mound at Waterville Park in Waterbury to hold the Wild to just two hits for the game. Behind an RBI from Tony Geraci and two hits from Aaron Granahan, the Plowboys put up two runs in the top of the first inning, while starter David Fredlund blanked Waterbury for three innings. The Wild scored twice in the fourth, led by Fraz Kadar who came through with Waterbury’s first hit. But Granahan belted in the winning run with an RBI double in the top of the fifth for Bethlehem. Plowboy pitchers Jason Krajeski (2 innings) and Sam Iverson (save) came in to ice the lead.
Burlington 5, Naugatuck 1
Justin Campbell led the offense going 3-for-4 on the day including a double and Jimmy Spirito threw 5 shutout innings giving way to Ian Sullivan and Ray Ricker (each for 1 inning) who finished up the game.
